A figure showing that light pollution prolongs avian vocal activity by nearly an hour. (A) Most diurnal bird species show bimodal vocalization patterns with peaks in the morning and evening; in light-polluted landscapes (yellow shading), the first vocalizations occur earlier in the morning and the last vocalizations occur later in the evening. (B) Globally—averaged across species, space, and season—onset of morning vocalization shifted 18 min earlier in the brightest landscapes versus the darkest landscapes. (C) Similarly, evening cessation was delayed by an average of 32 min. In (B) and (C), lines are means and shaded regions are 95% confidence intervals (CI) of model predictions.

Light pollution is causing birds around the world to sing for longer each day, prolonging their vocalizations on average by 50 minutes, according to a new study in Science.

Eels spend several years as big clear, leaf shaped goobers in the ocean, just floating around being weird little guys. Eel Facts! Text STOP to cancel Eel Facts

Stuff reporting that just 655 teachers in Aotearoa are on $140k+, out of 150,000 educators. That's a whopping 0.42% of them.

we used to build household shrines to Going On The Computer and it's no coincidence that as we abandoned these we started straying further from god's light

Gosh it seems to me that Luxon needs some help in ensuring he can do his job properly- can’t attend a call with European leaders and Ukraine because it’s 1am? What a dickhead.

Imagine getting your country through a pandemic with one of the lowest mortality rates while mitigating economic impacts and then having everyone paint you as economic vandals when the truth is actually the opposite

You have until 1pm tomorrow to submit! Reminder it does not have to be super elaborate just an ‘I oppose this bill’. I know a lot of us are submissioned out- if you only have the spoons for a couple sentences te pai nā, your voice is still important

Reckon if you're confident in your position then being called 'spineless' for holding to it would generate more bemusement than offense but maybe that's just me

Ash and I just submitted in less than 5 minutes! Your submission does not have to be super elaborate

My reckons.
There is something desperately wrong with any system which condemns mildly critical language addressed towards privileged power holders, but is utterly silent on the intentional starvation of children.

We have some really shitty people in power around the world right now, people who are so narcissistic and lacking in empathy or a care to understand anything other than themselves.

The coalition continues to walk along similar lines, like reading from his book.

Understanding ice cream negotiations in any language is a very valuable life skill!

It’s more Trump-era, America-centric politics. They want to be America (look at the push to privatise healthcare). Americans have been taught that anyone speaking another language must be plotting against them so they must speak one language & one language only= English. That+ racism= monolingualism

From the age of four she could hold conversations in three languages.
I have a three year old cousin who’s native language is Te reo Māori- he can easily switch to English (although he does judge if you can’t speak te reo Māori 🤣) to communicate. Most modern societies teach kids multiple languages

Exactly. My 10 year old cousin was speaking English, Croatian and Russian from the time she could talk. She knew our family spoke Croatian, mum spoke Russian and everyone else spoke English and could easily switch between them based on who she was speaking to/ context clues. This argument is dumb.

The most racist government since Muldoon and also the stupidest.

This bit: ‘…would remove the requirement for Health NZ to engage with IMPBs when determining priorities for kaupapa Māori investment.’
Make a submission because this doesn’t just look like a move towards privatisation but another attack on Māori rights… #Kikorangi #nzpol

Like… have had it my whole life but only just found out it existed because it somehow got worse after my ADHD symptoms were somewhat managed 🥲 I just thought it was normal to be a bit homicidal around that time 🤷‍♀️

I’ll have to give this a go! I only recently found out I have it after getting medicated for my ADHD and they’ve kinda just thrown a bunch of pills at it as a solution. Thank you for sharing 🫶

Ethel Cain’s Anti-Pop Stardom Hayden Anhedönia’s Southern-gothic storytelling made her a sensation. But her new album, “Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You,” underscores her unwillingness to be a celebrity.

Nothing could beat the artistic wonder that is Preacher’s Daughter but this album is a close second. Influenced by underground goth clubs and sad country folk, nobody does queer yearning like Ethel ❤️ her story-building is something else... She’s making history in the industry as a trans artist

Seymour doing things nobody asked for instead of tackling the crippling issues facing kiwis. As someone with an unusual allergy thats usually not included on menus etc. I’m extremely appreciative of our labelling laws that inform me of what will make me sick & what won’t. My celiac partner agrees

Barraged in the past few days by emails, meetings, and notices about funding cuts, AI, and fraud on massive scales while also grading student assignments showing huge increase in genAI usage. Feels like a complete existential crisis for research and higher education.
