“It's almost like we thought we were on the downside of the Industrial Revolution, retiring coal and gas, and now we have a new hump where we’re going to rise. That terrifies me in a lot of ways.”

Looking for good Earth Day news to celebrate? The world's 4th largest economy just got one step closer to making Big Oil pay their fair share of the costs of the climate disasters that are driving up home insurance premiums. envirovoters.org/lawmakers-st...
You ever try to code switch at work and fail? 😂
Washington State should respond by requiring schools to display its foundational religious text: the lyrics to “Hunger Strike” by Temple of the Dog. youtu.be/VUb450Alpps?...
200,000 acres of Native Hawaiian land. 100 years of federal trust obligation.
Trump's move: reclassify them as a racial group, not a tribal nation. Same land. New legal category. Zero obligation.
That's not a budget cut. That's a legal erasure. #taxtherich
Very powerful piece here by @billmckibben.bsky.social:
Big Oil Breaks Everything

This is already demonstrably incorrect. And Wright isn't even dead yet.
"The status quo of worsening disasters, perpetual insurance premium increases, & more uninsured families is untenable. But it’s likely to persist until Big Oil companies pay their fair share for the weather chaos they knowingly brought about." @commondreams.org www.commondreams.org/opinion/big-...
insurance companies shouldn't be allowed to invest in fossil fuels
Republicans know they are about to lose the House and are trying to give Big Oil its holy grail: legal immunity from any futures actions that would hold the industry responsible for the climate crisis it knowingly caused and is making worse every day.

1/ "This is the pivot point in the energy transition folks. Fossil chaos drives people to electrotech, as this is the first oil shock with a superior alternative. " says @ember-energy.org @kingsmillbond.bsky.social
We argued similarly last week at Wesleyan (slides here)

I know this is true. I've known it for a while. I still have trouble believing it each time I see it because it is so mind boggling.
This is the fourth largest economy in the world.
"Fossil gas down 60% in 2026 v 2023."
This year, somewhere in the ballpark of 25 million Americans will inhale wildfire smoke — "probably the most toxic type of air pollution [they’re] ever exposed to," Brian Moench, the president at Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment, a nonprofit clean-air advocacy group, told me.
In the short term, the Iran War is delivering massive windfall profits to Big Oil. But in the long term, this is likely to be recorded as a step change moment weakening the fossil fuel industry's domination of the global energy system.
@microsoft.com is signing deals with companies like Chevron to burn fossil fuels and satiate its unending need for more and more electricity as it races to win the AI race.

Installing a Prego camera doorbell, a Prego infrared surveillance system in the bathroom, Prego microphones in my kids’ bedrooms. That spaghetti sauce can have all the personal data it wants. We’ve been through so much together.
"The average American homeowner isn’t responsible for this climate chaos; why are they the ones picking up the tab for the billions of dollars of damage it leaves in its wake?" @commondreams.org www.commondreams.org/opinion/big-...
we'd like you to think of the surveillance state as less of a prison panopticon and more of a photo album assembled by a guy who hides in your house
Fun fact: The Rangers' majority owner co-founded Energy Transfer, which built and operates the Dakota Access Pipeline. Rangers players wear Energy Transfer logo patches on their jerseys as part of a sponsorship deal.
Energy Transfer is currently on the verge of bankrupting Greenpeace in the U.S.
America’s largest bank is expanding its data center in Orangeburg, NY, near the New Jersey border.
In exchange for $77 million in tax breaks from the state and county, the bank promises to create exactly one permanent job.

US Southern Command: On April 19, at the direction of #SOUTHCOM commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan, Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by Designated Terrorist Organizations. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along known narco-trafficking routes in the Caribbean and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. Three male narco-terrorists were killed during this action. No U.S. military forces were harmed. @DeptofWar #OpSouthernSpear UNCLASSIFIED

"CareTrust, which now owns more than 500 senior housing and nursing home buildings, reported net income last year of $320 million from $476 million in rents and other revenue — a 67% profit margin."
Another story that makes one wonder what Seattle has gained from a decade-plus of wealthy newcomers flooding in for tech
Costs skyrocketing, institutions struggling, arts shrinking
Could we look back and realize all this money, rather than an infusion, was like an antibiotic hitting the gut biome
Of course the roots of the “shadow docket” are in service to the fossil fuel billionaires who captured the Court. 🧵
the thing about our current moment is that yes, the anti-AI and anti-big tech people are getting very reactive nowadays - but have you seen what they’re *reacting* to?
it is, among other things, incredibly striking to see that roberts was so solicitous of the burden the clean power plan might put on fossil fuel executives, when, a decade later, he is indifferent to the way trump’s moves have thrown hundreds of thousands of lives into turmoil.
Not for nothing, one sees no sign here — or as others note, anyplace else in today’s blockbuster story — of Roberts or other justices weighing the externalized costs of spilling CO₂-rich coal emissions into the sky.
“The most expensive regulation ever”: not as expensive as climate change, tho’.
Learn whatever you want about "law," it doesn't matter because GOP Justices blew up the entire process of deciding cases based on chats with rich friends and stuff they watched on TV. That was the entire basis on which SCOTUS switched to the shadow docket.
