This is fascinating! It gave me a pretty good answer in the end (I asked about the evolution of the carbon cycle) but randomly spun itself in circles doing (what seemed to me to be) a completely irrelevant algebra problem to get there.

I want a cure. I’m watching the chance of one in my lifetime slip away.
Indirect rates are not determined by NIH. Instead, they are the product of elaborate negotiations between each institution and the “cognizant federal agency” according to an Office of Management and Budget document, Circular A-21.

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%.
I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters.

Long read, very instructive on the mechanisms & misconceptions re LC. „Long COVID is blood vessel damage, brain damage, organ damage, immune system damage, and mitochondrial damage. It is real, it is devastating, and it is happening to people every day. And it can happen to you, after any infection“
In an unprecedented collective scientific effort to understand the short- and long-term health impacts of wildfires, researchers from four universities have launched a 10-year study of the Los Angeles fires. A key goal is to share evidence-based, rapid answers to the affected communities.
I have seen this tweet go by a thousand times today and I’m sure he has it muted now but if someone in my life said this to me I would probably cry and love them hard for opening up to this painful knowledge.
Tell this to your disabled people. (They might be pissed at you but that’s good too.)
list of banned keywords
🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.
I am starting a thread of links to federal sites on the Wayback Machine, before the current vandalism.
Please RT and add to this list!

This Fiona Apple narrated explainer PSA on how to film (and release footage from, not livestream) ICE arrests is exactly what we need from people with production skills right now and is worth about 3 million celebrity “imagine” covers in terms of survival utility
So, a quick reminder ...
The entire archive of CDC datasets can be found here.
HUGE shoutout to data archivists- this work is important 👏🙌🏻

I won’t equate my or my colleagues’ experiences as academics* with the more vulnerable communities targeted by the Trump administration. But there are some developments I’d like to share as an academic in a red state working at a public university. 1/
NEW Public Resource
Tracker: Legal Challenges to Trump Administration Actions
A catalogue compiling all the legal challenges facing the #TrumpAdministration’s executive orders and actions.
It is v interesting that altho most of the legal convo on this site yesterday about the OMB freeze of federal funding focused on impoundment issues, the complaint that led to the administrative stay of the freeze last night instead made a 1A argument. 🧵
Academic Skyers: I am compiling a list of policies and statements from various universities about how they are handling the "pause" in terms of stopping expenditures (or not).
Please respond to this post with your institution and materials.
THANK YOU!
I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.
“Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.
It is *very* important to understand that Jews were never the only target of the 1930s Nazis and they are not the only targets of today’s Nazis. A Nazi salute is not only antisemitic. It is also racist, ableist, and queerphobic.
Wearing a high quality well fitting mask when you're out in public will do more for communities, from local to national, than deleting your Twitter or Instagram account.

The "he's not gonna listen to her" reactions are missing many points. Lots of other people are also hearing it. Lots of people can see him hearing it, then weigh what she's said with what he'll do. Lots of people can see her refusal to surrender these ancient teachings to the latest face of empire
ATTN: THREAD: The loyalty interviews have begun in DC. As someone who has direct experience with this, I have a couple of recommendations for all federal workers. Please share this widely, and with any federal government employee you know. 1/
I wrote about how neighbors can play a role in helping disabled and aging people plan for and evacuate when wildfires hit at @motherjones.com.
