I think we can see how this will play out:

The US will either run away but declare “victory” or it will announce ground troops. In either case the war with Iran was lost the moment it began. This is why it is important to declare war based on facts and international law. Without a real objective there is no winning.

Whether this story is true or not: preventive wars have a pretty poor track record when it comes to earning political bonus points.
