I did write a little thing about today, because I couldn't help myself, and you can read it on my webblog www.anxietyshark.ca/any-light-in...

The original Trek pilot, "The Cage," had a woman as first officer of the Enterprise and an alien on the bridge crew. Which might not seem political to a viewer now, but definitely was in the 1960s. (The episode, kind of cheekily, is also an allegory about not getting too wrapped up in media.)
Good lord. Pure evil.
Lost star maps. Fantasy worlds that are mapped but where even a fifty-mile journey has its surprises. Multiple vibrant cultures, none of which is the author's idea of either a 100% utopian or dystopian society, and characters from those cultures working together. Grumpy wizards. First-person snark.
When you tell a black artist that he is not wanted, he does not stop creating. Artists would die if they could not create. He will create in secret and then take his creations to a place where he is wanted. And then sell his wares without a racist censor or a bigoted and condescending middleman.
Warmish day, but good turnout along El Camino Real in the political dead-zone of Silicon Valley.
Over eight million Americans took to the streets today, which makes No Kings 3 the biggest single day of protest in the history of our country. #NoKings
"'Despair, or folly?' said Gandalf. 'It is not despair, for despair is only for those who see the end beyond all doubt... Well, let folly be our cloak, a veil before the eyes of the Enemy... the only measure that he knows is desire, desire for power; and so he judges all hearts...'" J.R.R. Tolkien

Reposting -- "No Kings" protests across the U.S. tomorrow! Here's one in our corner of California:
A drunk former fox news host refused to promote two Black and two female officers because a convicted felon and 5x draft dodger does not want to stand next to a Black woman at military events.
Think about that for a second.
You have to be fucking deranged to believe that the configuration of basically *anyone else’s* genitals are any of your fucking business, but particularly those of a total stranger. These people are just perverts, right?

I keep hoping that Republicans in Congress will start resisting and impeaching simply out of self-interest because they actually live in this country and have a stake in its survival. Silly me.
Reposting: A little over a day until the next "No Kings" protests. Here's one in our area:
A Texas school district has banned HOW LONG TIL BLACK FUTURE MONTH, along with over 1500 other books. Mine was kicked bc it's labeled for adults, which is true. But so are every one of my books, which are available in most schools.
That's the only one with "Black" in the title, tho.

From Butler to Borges, Le Guin to Asimov—writers who have moved speculative fiction forward know that defying convention can be necessary. For the next generation of writers ready to use defiance as inspiration, Saturday's class with @benjaminrosenbaum.com is a must. Info here: bit.ly/4scjlid.
"The government is wrong on the text, the history, and the tradition, going all the way back to English common law, and we expect that’s exactly what the Supreme Court will say at the end of the day."
Sharing a link: Stand Up for Science will host an online "No Kings" Rally 3/28. The banner reads, "Online March 28th, 12:30-2pm CT / For Everyone, Everywhere. No Kings 3 Accessible Rally Organized by Stand Up for Science." No Kings and SUFS logos are at bottom.

Do not pander. Do not dumb down. Trust your audience to be smarter than you. Trust them to be curious. Don’t erase your own voice for spurious bowing down to factors that bring nothing to the stories you need to tell. #Writing

This is a rectangular banner, nearly as tall as it is wide, with mostly white lettering on a blue field. In the upper left is a white-outlined, yellow-filled crown, crossed out by a red "X." Beside the crown are the words "No Kings" in large font and all caps. Below in a smaller font but still all caps are the words, "From Palo Alto to Sunnyvale on El Camino Real!" Under that is a thick yellow line. Below the line are the all-caps words "Power Belongs to the People." Under that in blue are the words, "Saturday, March 28, 2-4pm." There is a QR code near the lower left corner, beside the following words, printed white in all caps in small font: "Pick your location: https://tinyurl.com/nkd3segments" followed by "Learn more: https://Tinyurl.com/nkd3pa2sv." In the background, the blue field has rows and columns of faded lettering in black reading "No Kings."
One week until a "No Kings" protest in the south SF Bay Area, March 28, 2-4pm, along El Camino Real from Palo Alto to Sunnyvale. I'll be there with a flag in one hand and one of my hand-made signs in the other. My go-to is "Stop Shredding the Constitution" which, alas, never goes out of style.
ONE WEEK FROM TODAY: March 28 will be the biggest protest in US history. Find your local No Kings event to make clear you're part of The Resistance to this regime’s brutality at home, pathetic ineptness, perpetual lying & their illegal war in Iran. ✊https://app.sosha.ai/s/39HA7UDd
We are three weeks into an unconstitutional, undeclared war.
And quite aside from whether we should be in it (spoiler: I don't think we should), the fact that Congress hasn't even done so much as rubber-stamp it after the fact is doing harm to our democracy that we'll feel long after the war.
