I did it wrong: Dimetrodon had a longer neckDr. Scott Hartman's Skeletal Drawing.com A bunch of years ago I carefully planned out how to do more short-form content for this blog, and one of those ideas was for a series of You’re Doing it Wrong… posts highlighting common errors in do...

An update to my Dimetrodon skeletal, plus proof that my blog does, in fact still work: www.skeletaldrawing.com/home/i-did-i...

Guilty as charged. It shouldn't take another half decade for the next post, either.

The wrist is about as folded as I'd be comfortable (or more importantly, it would be comfortable) with. You could rotate the shoulder back a bit, or open the elbow if you want the wing pointing up and back more. I'll have more on the pose another time.

Yeah, it's a thing I figured out anatomically in like 2020-2021, but it's taken a while to propagate it across most of the relevant skeletal.

I realize saying "I hopefully have a blog post coming" isn't very comforting when I haven't posted to my blog in half a decade...

I have a blog post hopefully coming soon on that, but I think the transition from typical theropod posture to avian posture happened in fits and starts in maniraptorans.

They're probably about twice the weight of a wild turkey, so that's pretty apt!

The amount of AI generated art in slides at this conference, primarily used by older scientists, is killing me. Scientists please. Don’t use these ai platforms to make your figures or slides. They look bad and I have yet to see them meaningfully improve the message of talks.

Not a stuffed animal I expected to see at my local Half-Priced Boos, but a welcome one.

Kids, being cute but demanding since the Cretaceous.

A quick little doodle of a baby Maiasaura, inspired by the recent study reinforcing the idea that they stayed in the nest for a good while and needed intensive care.

David James Armsby has done it again! Dinosauria is, in my opinion, the pinnacle of what paleo-media can be. I can't wait for the next one!

Two illustrations of a Tyrannosaurus rex on a white background. The first is significantly shorter and heavier than the second, which was produced with close reference to accurate skeletal drawings. Both have drab grey/brown bodies with striped tails, and prominent red colouration to the neck and head.

And this, dear reader, is why we use references. The top illustration was done some time ago, largely from memory. A museum wanted to licence it, but I insisted on reworking it first, to make it more accurate and appropriate for an educational setting. The difference is kinda dramatic! 😳
