Ao longo de três ondas de um survey nacional, acompanhamos como as crenças dos brasileiros em alegações falsas sobre fraude eleitoral evoluíram — e como essas crenças afetaram a disposição de estender direitos civis a opositores políticos.
Este estudo examina a relação entre desinformação e intolerância política durante a Eleição de 2022 no Brasil. Usando uma pesquisa em três ondas, mostramos que cidadãos que acreditam em alegações falsas sobre fraude eleitoral se tornam mais intolerantes com oponentes políticos ao longo do tempo. A crença em desinformação eleitoral consistentemente previu aumentos na intolerância no decorrer da eleição. Encontramos um efeito indireto do uso de aplicativos de mensagens para notícias e intolerância, mediado pela crença em desinformação eleitoral, sugerindo que cidadãos que dependem de aplicativos de mensagens para notícias são mais suscetíveis a acreditar em desinformação e também aos seus efeitos prejudiciais à democracia. Essas descobertas destacam a desinformação eleitoral como um fator-chave de atitudes intolerantes em democracias polarizadas, operando não apenas ao corroer a confiança nas instituições, mas também ao minar o compromisso dos cidadãos com as normas democráticas.

A consequence of being a Brazilian researcher is that I don't often get scared with things, but these results show reasons to be concerned about the effects of misinformation beyond people's confusion about facts. They can impact cornerstones of democracy, leading to more pervasive problems.
Messaging apps also seem important in the story: we find an indirect pathway in which getting news on messaging apps is associated with higher belief in electoral misinformation, which in turn leads to higher levels of intolerance. We found no effects of using social media for news.
Across a three-wave national survey, we tracked how Brazilians’ beliefs in false claims about electoral fraud evolved and how these beliefs affected their willingness to extend civil rights to political opponents. We find an association between belief in electoral misinformation and intolerance.
Abstract: This study examines the relationship between misinformation and political intolerance during the 2022 Brazilian Election. Using a three-wave survey, we show that citizens who believe false claims about electoral fraud become more intolerant toward political opponents over time. Beliefs in electoral misinformation consistently predicted increases in intolerance over the course of the election. We find an indirect effect for using messaging apps for news and intolerance, mediated by beliefs in electoral misinformation, suggesting that citizens who rely on messaging apps for news are not only more susceptible to believing misinformation but also to its detrimental effects on democracy. These findings highlight electoral misinformation as a key driver of intolerant attitudes in polarized democracies, operating not only by eroding trust in institutions but also by undermining citizens’ commitment to democratic norms.

You don't have to believe that the fascists are competent enough to suppress voting everywhere in 2026 or 2028. You just have to believe that they can depress minority turnout in 5-10 cities to affect entire Senate races & the Electoral College. 2024 was decided by 120K votes in 3 states, after all.
