Good morning, beloved.

We cannot change the world without changing our minds.

The capacity for transformation begins with an expanded capacity for imagination.

Today is a great day to overcome evil with good.

In my first book, I wrote that discovering God as you work out your faith means you need to get comfortable being called a heretic.

And thatโ€™s not because youโ€™re actually a heretic.

Itโ€™s cuz a lot of people who accuse others of heresy donโ€™t actually know what that means, lol

Good morning, beloved.

We cannot make peace without abandoning violence.

And violence begins with an intention.

lol, deploying rank antisemitism to argue with a Christian is an interesting choice, but I suppose you wouldnโ€™t be the first.

Jesus did not come to show us how we should have died, but to show us the way to truly live.

NOBODY deserves what Jesus got on that cross.

A god who thinks you deserve to be crucified is a monster.

On the cross, Jesus shows us the result of sin and depravity in high definition. And then Jesus conquers sin in the resurrection.

And that sounds like Good News to me.

Good morning, beloved.

Justice is what love looks like in practice.

And love seeks restoration, not retribution.

Today is a great day to overcome evil with good.

I do not have one single kind word to share about the penal substitutionary theory of atonement.

Thereโ€™s a remarkably small chance you have the argument thatโ€™s gonna change that, and if me calling it awful is going to upset youโ€ฆ itโ€™s probably best you not engage this.

The only things PSA adds to the picture that arenโ€™t sufficiently covered by other theories are reprehensible.

To include it fails to describe the character of God.

Itโ€™s an abysmal picture of a loving creator who operates in forgiveness & restoration instead of vengeance & retribution.

The cross is where we see human depravity in hi-def. Only a deeply sick people could conceive of & carry out such a display.

AND, it is where we see the commitment of God made plain. Knowing what we are capable of, Jesus STILL chose love.

And the powers of death are defeated in the Resurrection.

But it doesnโ€™t have to stay that way.

It doesnโ€™t have to be that way.

On this Holy Saturday, Iโ€™m inviting us to feel the dissonance between this barbaric narrative and the Good News.

There is yet a better way. 5/5

If another human told you that you deserved to be mangled and tortured to death in public, would you desire a relationship with that person?

If the answer is no, then why would we have a *lower* standard for relationship with God?

The answer is delusion.

Bad religion. 4/5

Godโ€™s introduction to relationship appeals to the character & faithfulness of God.

If a god introduced themself to you by telling you that you deserve to be beaten to a bloody pulp and hungโ€ฆ and you agree, youโ€™re in a relationship defined by divine violence. 3/5

At a certain point, we have to grapple with what holding these beliefs says about *you*.

For the moment, letโ€™s set aside whether you believe God/the Bible says WE deserve crucifixion (it doesnโ€™t, by the way).

โ€ฆyouโ€™d call such a bloodthirsty, sadistic god โ€œgoodโ€? 2/5

Many western Christians received theological narratives that have harmed our moral imaginations.

Telling people that Jesus took on what they deserve on the crossโ€”that they deserve to be beaten and tortured, hung on display until they dieโ€”is obviously demented. 1/5
