Everything could be made smaller, more decentralized. Now we're back to making everything BIGGER, more resource consuming, more expensive, centralized and closed. That's how you can tell intelligence it's no longer at the helm.
I mean, for all its narrative licenses, you can still see the years when technology was pushed forward by ingenuity, and the hope of creating things that users actually WANTED.

What a wonderful movie is The Secret Agent. Please don't overlook the "hairy leg" bit as just some quirky South American magical realism bit. Dictatorships in SA used to come up with crazy stuff to co-opt the news cycle: in Chile they made up a whole case of apparitions of the Virgin Mary.
I've been watching this wonderful anime series from the late 80s called Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and couldn't help drawing fan art of it… Here's one of the mc, Yang Weng-Li, along his aide Frederica.
