Very specifically! Tiktok chose advertisers sensibilities above all else in a way ive never seen before, forcing people to censor to even talk about this topics (bad enough), which subsequently exposed a lot of people to topics they specifically try to avoid (even worse)

To summarize: the phenomenon of tiktok relied on very specific circumstances (growing political unrest, evolution of socmed, forced lock down) to become what it is today and those same circumstances are what makes it so specifically dangerous

Youtube, Vine, even the og tiktok Musical.ly never had as much hold on people as the current iteration of tiktok. The natural progression of our political culture going far-right conspiracy crazy at the same time this app took off was a recipe for disaster

The quickness with which false information spreads is staggering. Again, youtube has problems with it's algo promoting bad shit, but the scroll-ability and share-ability of tiktok amplifies that same problem 10x over

The way everyone nows self-censors words like rape, suicide, murder because of tiktoks algorithm is brand new. Even in years of dealing with the youtube censors, creators never went that far. They would bleep out or other things, but never "give horrible things silly names"

I think that it rebranded/relaunched right around the lock down really gave it a set of claws we've never seen before. No socmed has ever taken off so quickly and retained so much staying power. It's impact can be seen across platforms in the worst way
