The Art of Crocheting - 1891
It's rather funny that the book opens by referring to crochet as a "pastime," considering that we often still more or less refer to it that way well over a century later.

three crocheted flowers - one large with black center/yellow petals, one medium with yellow center/orange petals and one small with yellow center/blue petals - sitting on a white table with three crochet hooks (pink, teal, orange).
Simple Flowers - use any yarn and the corresponding hook size Colors A & B center: make a ring chain 2 11 DC in the ring - tie off color A (along with the chain, there are now 12 stitches, you will work into every other one to create 6 petals) Petals: Round 1: *[sc, ch 6, sc] into the same stitch, ch1, skip a stitch* repeat 6x, slip stitch into the first sc Round 2: *sc, hdc 2x, dc 3x, chain 2, dc 3x, hdc 2x, sc* repeat 6x to complete the petals.
A friend wants to learn crochet, to make flowers. This is the simplest I could come up with. Same pattern, 3 different sizes and yarns. Small is in cotton, medium is wool, large is polyester chenille. They each have their own charm. So, I made a little pattern. Feel free to share!
The difference is staggering!
