Campbell River's unsanctioned overdose prevention site calls for safer drug policy 'People are dying'

I'm learning so much from this lovely team of folks up in Campbell River. The north Island badly needs more support, yet their city is actively working against them.

The City of CR is ok with anti-abortion protests, but shows with force when people are trying to keep their grown children alive. 🫠

This interview hits important points:
Witnessed consumption will make safer supply inaccessible in rural communities. Indigenous populations will be disproportionately harmed. No experts were consulted.

This is reactionary politics.

Keep politics out of medicine.

B.C. ends take-home safer supply for drug users to stop diversion | CBC News The health minister says the "significant" change to end the take-home model will be difficult for some but is designed to reduce the criminal diversion of prescribed alternatives.

The end of take-home safe supply programs in BC is devastating news. Witnessed options aren’t possible in almost every jurisdiction. This will result in deprescribing, forced tapering and sadly in deaths.
Cowardly politicians caving to misinformation.

B.C. ends take-home safer supply for drug users to stop diversion British Columbia's health minister has announced that the province is changing its safer-supply anti-addiction program to a witnessed model, in which users will be watched as they consume the drugs.

How do these people sleep at night?

I would rather the streets be flooded with clean, diverted drugs than have an entire population of already vulnerable people further fucked over.

Fucking shameful.

Media, politicians are rebranding coercion against drug users as β€˜care’ ⋆ The Breach Governments are using forced abstinence to hide their failuresβ€”and our biggest papers are helping them

Autistic people can't have one place to be themselves with the support they need,

Because people will worry "what happens when the support goes away?" and think burnout and trauma is the way to independence.

And parents are forced to choose between no support, or ABA.

It's honestly sick.

1 year ago 48 7 3 0

I was reminded tonight that ABA still exists,

And I still can't believe the argument for ABA is either

1) Traumatize the autistic person so they deal with scary society "easier"
2) Make them as "independent" as possible so they can navigate society

You know what reduces functioning? Trauma & PTSD

This is exactly the book we need right now. It reminds us that in a capitalist society, taking time to rest is an act of resistance & liberation. Being continually exhausted/unwell/overwhelmed makes is easier to manipulate.

Rest is an act of community care.

It was helpful for me to redefine the word disability as something that was morally neutral. I still hate those things, but it's more of a fact-based process than an internal judgement now. Plus, it makes people super uncomfortable to see someone not shy away from the word disability, which is fun.

"Communication pages like this are not just for people who absolutely can’t ever speak. They are for anyone, anywhere, who for whatever reason would be unable to say things like this in situations where they need to be able to say it."

Communication skills can fluctuate.

We need more mainstream info about autistic joy & thriving looks like, rather than only focusing on the tougher parts. To do this, try to learn from advocates focused on the neurodiversity paradigm rather than professionals trained in the pathology paradigm.
