Are online book clubs a thing? I really want to join a book club, but my in-person options are limited.

A shot from the song "we don't talk about Bruno" in the movie Encanto. It is in a meme format where the top of text reads "We don't talk about things", and the bottom text reads "that aren't the Moon."

A few have suggested that some aspects of this mission--joy, international teamwork, diversity--are being played up to stick it to the hateful attitude of the administration. But I don't think it's that. I think it's just that those things are essential to and inseparable from a mission like this.

Introvert pro tip: if you're wearing a mask, people will assume you don't want to talk.

I know I'm a little late to the party, but I'm firmly in the "Angine de Poitrine is pretty great, actually" camp.

As a Christian, I don't think federal agencies should be referring to "Christ, our Savior" in any context. I don't need my government to validate my faith. That's why it's called faith. More importantly, my government shouldn't be invalidating the religions of other Americans.

I find myself with a significantly larger block of free time than I usually have, and I'm going to do the only logical thing:

Learn OCaml.

A full disc image of Earth, as seen from the Orion Crew Module. The planet is a pale blue, swirling with white clouds and glowing slightly lighter blue in place from reflected light. At lower left, a large brown landmass is Africa, with Spain and Portugal with twinkling lights where the planet curves. At top right, auroras glow in a thin green glow, just barely separated from the planet's surface. Earth is set against the black of space (pic: NASA/R.Wiseman)

More context on this #Artemis II image:

* This is the night side, lit by moonlight. You can see city lights in Spain & Portugal, & a sliver of day at lower right

* The Sun is entirely behind Earth, which makes it a kind of solar eclipse, but w/ Earth doing the eclipsing instead of the Moon:

Apparently while Winnie was being boarded during our vacation, she learned a new skill...

I am working on a research language that is designed primarily for LLMs to read and write and for humans to review. It seems like this is the direction the software industry is headed, so why not lean into the idea?

Same. I have not regretted my purchase for a moment.

I appreciate beautiful application design with thoughtful use of color, but I honestly prefer spartan monochrome UIs most of the time.

A dimly-lit photograph of a black three-ring binder that has a page with several charts for manual data entry in its rings and a sheet titled "reference: warm up" in the front pocket. It appears to be sitting on top of a black dorm style fridge on a concrete floor, and the photographer's feet and pants are visible below.

After literally months of wanting to plan and track my workouts better, I finally did it! I have reference sheets for warm-ups and cool-downs as well as weekly workouts with progressions and a monthly tracking sheet.

I am so excited about Apple TV's plans to create a Misborn movie series and a Stormlight TV show! Who are your casting picks?

Discworld QOTD, from Thud!

“Beating people up in little rooms…he knew where that led. And if you did it for a good reason, you’d do it for a bad one. You couldn’t say ‘We’re the good guys’ and do bad-guy things.”

Yeah, I use zfs on Linux for my NAS, and it is fantastic!
The main reasons I use FreeBSD on one of my servers are that the user experience of jails for full-system virtualization beats both containers and vms, network admin is simpler, and DTrace has much better support.

Unfortunately not. It works great in virtualized environments, and my Intel Ethernet works well enough, but anything remotely exotic probably won't work very well.
