I think a large part of this NDIS discourse comes from our national self identity as a ‘young and healthy’ country. The NDIS revealed just how much silent suffering was actually here, and they hate knowing for sure because it means the systems they believe in are actually harmful.

Just because we live in a surveillance culture AND all have a camera in our pocket, does not mean it’s always right to film or be filmed. They should also be taught that just because it’s legal to film doesn’t mean it’s ethical. We should teach kids to guard what scant privacy we can still manage.

CCTV at a workplace is not the same as being featured in a TikTok for profit, which is not the same as being in news reportage, which is not the same as being in the background in a public place, which is not the same as being in the faux public space of a private business, etc etc

I hope as part of year 7/8 ‘media’ class they’re now including info on your legal rights and responsibilities when filming strangers/being filmed by a stranger, because judging by the average content section of these types of TikToks, the youth are completely misinformed:
