In case you missed it, the Star Tribune posted a great op-ed from AFP and MHP, highlighting how the Starter Homes Act is a bipartisan solution to our housing crisis that legislators need to act on this year, but the window to do so is narrowing.

Sen. Boldon, pathway to Judiciary committee. Sen. Abeler asks about pathway, falls under 504b, must go to Judiciary.

Sen. Pha - closing statements. "Minnesotan's are depending on us to make sure they are not displaced from their homes."

Sen. Boldon - to Judiciary and rules, reccommended to pass.

Sen. Clark - "would this actually affect supply or price?"

Sen. Pha - passing to testifier.

In 8 other states, passing just cause policies did not have a reduction in housing production. Adding supply and providing stability are things that work together.

Sen. Pha - sometimes people don't get along, but people should still be able to live in their home as long as they are being good tenants even if they aren't "personable".

Should landlords have the right to make people leave if they just "don't get on as neighbors"? - Sen. Abeler

Sen. Pha - talks about how "material breach" of the lease are within the reasons to not-renew.

We need homes, and allowing more homes to be built means that more people can also find new homes nearby or move to a new community.

Tenant protections, like the right to renew, are vital for helping people to stay in their homes. This is about balancing power between renters and landlords.

Neighbors for More Neighbors knows that more homes also need tenant protections so that people can stay in the communities they love.

Now our own Angela Bonfiglio speaking on how she was pushed out of her building, and how requests for reasonable repairs were met with non-renewal of leases. Long term tenants were forced out, with no reasons and no adequate time to move.

Ms. Seretha Lee talking about living in Brooklyn Park and being one of forty families that were issued non-renewal notices. Broooklyn Park's right to renew helped her and her building neighbors to stay in their home.

Right to renew would allow for the same kinds of protections that tenants have in eviction court that they do not currently have at the time their lease comes up for renewal.

Today is about re-balancing tenant and landlord power imbalance. "Difficult tenants", ones that report issues to the city or organize with neighbors, are often non-renewed.

Brooklyn Center already has right to renew. This has helped to protect tenants stay in their homes.

Bill provides basic fairness and transparency by creating more clarity around why people are not being allowed to continue to rent their home.
