“We have safe consumption sites all over the place, they’re just not necessarily sanctioned. It is things like neighbors looking out for each other. That is not a new concept.”
Really thorough piece on SF’s shifting position on harm rediction from @sydneyfjohnson.bsky.social
WED at 9AM:
Professor Keith Humphreys, @dr-tyler-termeer.bsky.social and reporter @sydneyfjohnson.bsky.social join to talk about how San Francisco's scaling back of its harm reduction policy might impact drug use in the city.
âť“ What do you think about SF's new harm reduction policy?
The study places doubt on former Mayor London Breed’s claim last November that law enforcement actions contributed to the 22% reduction in overdoses from 2023 to 2024. Instead, it seems more likely that the drop could be attributed to the city’s increase in naloxone distribution.
San Francisco supervisors hope to use Mayor Daniel Lurie’s recent expansion of executive powers in a new push to combat drug dealing — one that would bring an outside expert’s approach despite a looming $840 million budget deficit. @sydneyfjohnson.bsky.social

Mayor Lurie's new triage center was closed all last weekend due to staffing shortages, according to the mayor's spokesperson, and police have not used the site for any arrest processing (a stated goal of the site). Many questions remain.

The work of EdSource journalists has never been more crucial, given the continuous threats to democracy and the unprecedented challenges facing the public education system. Since its founding, EdSource has grown from an authoritative source of school financial data and analysis to California’s leading education news source. By unionizing, EdSource Guild members hope to maintain our organization's relentless drive for critical and ethical journalism, while building an inclusive and equitable newsroom. At a critical time for press freedoms and with the rights of journalists under constant threat, we also want to stand with our fellow organized workers in this age-old craft to protect the cherished common duty to inform the public without fear or favor. Our job is to hold the powerful accountable and be advocates for students, parents, educators and taxpayers. Now, this union must balance the scales of power and decision-making within our organization. Our award-winning stories, investigations, data analysis, podcasts, roundtables and documentaries illuminate the toughest education issues and inform students, families and education decision-makers about California schools. EdSource journalists are often called upon by television and radio shows to discuss our stories and provide meaningful context to education issues. To preserve and protect quality journalism, to have a say in decisions that affect coverage and to be fairly compensated for this work, EdSource reporters must unionize. We want to create a culture that embraces a healthy work-life balance, and we want to be a destination where talented journalists can spend their careers. That requires adequate compensation that keeps up with the skyrocketing cost of living in California. Unionizing will help us create the best version of EdSource, protect our work and mission, and preserve this organization’s legacy for the future.
