Juan Valera, the Red Sox prospect who left his last start with an elbow injury, will indeed get an MRI.

Payton Tolle was scratched from his scheduled start for the WooSox on Saturday, and isn’t starting today. He’s being held back in case the Sox have a doubleheader tomorrow.
Garrett Crochet and the Red Sox believe his career-worst start against the Twins was an aberration - but they recognize that he has work to do to be the pitcher he aspires to be. A closer look at his work and areas of focus leading into Sunday’s start vs Detroit: www.bostonglobe.com/2026/04/18/s...

From the Sox:
The Red Sox have moved the start time of their game tomorrow, Sunday, April 19, against the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park from 1:35 p.m. to 4:35 p.m.
The change was made in consultation with MLB due to a forecast for an extended period of rain from mid-day into the afternoon.
Tarik Skubal wobbled, and the Red Sox had a shot.
“He gets in everybody's heads. … He's that good.”

The Red Sox lose, 4-1. They've scored exactly one run in each of the first two games of this series against the Tigers.
Tarik Skubal got 19 swings-and-misses by the Red Sox today, the most of any pitcher against the Sox this year. Lance McCullers (17) had been the standard-setter. In 2025, 8 pitchers got 19+ swings/misses against the Sox, with Zack Wheeler (22) leading the way.
Jeff Kinney and Greg Heffley with the first pitch. Look forward to a future appearance by Rowley.
Yoshida chops a single over the drawn-in, five-man infield. The Red Sox walk off with a 1-0 win over the Tigers. It's Yoshida's first career walkoff hit.
Story narrowly avoided a brutal error with two outs and Dingler (Manfred Man) on third, as he sailed his throw to first. But Contreras hopped to grab it and tag out Torkelson, and so... the Sox will have a Manfred Man on second in the bottom of the 10th with a chance to walk it off.
A two-out double by Jahmai Jones would have scored a run from 2nd, but the aggressive play by Willson Contreras with one out to force Torres at 2nd (with McGonigle taking first) meant there were runners on 2nd/3rd. Chapman responded with his fastest pitches of the year to punch out Dingler.
For the second time tonight, a Marcelo Mayer tag - with an assist from a replay overturn - gives the Sox an out at second.
With a man on first and two outs in the eighth, Roman Anthony just lined a sinker to the track in left-center. In the summer, it's probably an RBI double off the Wall. Here, it's the third out, and the scoreless tie between the Sox and Tigers persists into the ninth.
Sheesh. Front-door sinker for Suarez to freeze Lee and end the 1-2-3 eighth inning. Suarez is at eight shutout innings in 93 pitches. Assuming that's it for him, Suarez joins Crochet as the only Sox lefties with 8 shutout innings in a Fenway start since 2020.
Ranger Suarez: 7 shutout innings, 82 pitches. He hasn't allowed a hit in the last six innings.
Ranger Suarez is now at 12 straight scoreless innings across his last two starts. He just had an 8-pitch sixth inning.
Kevin McGonigle's scoreboard pic looks a lot like Blaze Jordan's.
...big league debut, discovering that Fenway in April is a very unfavorable setting for homers, and that Rafaela covers a lot of ground.
Ranger Suarez has tossed five scoreless innings, and has put up 11 straight zeros over the last two starts. He's only gotten four swings-and-misses, but has been the quintessential contact-manager, aided by Jones getting thrown out at 2nd in the first inning on a Wall ball and Hao-Yu Lee, in his...
...tailored suit on the trip. Bogaerts returned Regan's suit after having it dry-cleaned.)
One proud moment in Regan's career: When Xander Bogaerts was called up in 2013 for a West Coast roadtrip, he didn't have a suit (as required by the team at the time) for the flight. The Sox had to scramble. Regan, who is 6-ft-3, saved the day by lending Bogaerts his suit. (Pedroia got Bogaerts a ...
Also in the notebook: Longtime Red Sox front office member and West Roxbury native Mike Regan is leaving the Sox to pursue a career opportunity outside of baseball. He made numerous contributions to the Sox through the years, and was a beloved figure within the organization.
Yes, Tarik Skubal loves Fenway Park. No, he's not thinking about potentially desirable free-agent landing spots -- whether Boston or anywhere else. www.bostonglobe.com/2026/04/17/s...
Connor Wong smashed an automatic double into the Triangle. More evidence that he's in a different spot than last year, when he admitted to being in "a dark place at times" due to his injury-driven offensive struggles: www.bostonglobe.com/2026/04/04/s...
This call of the Arias homer captures…. A lot.
Arias just homered for the 3rd straight game, crushing a ball 440 feet to dead CF. More on his eye-opening start:
Willson Contreras just plowed into the tarp while chasing a foul ball down the first base line. The ball popped out of his glove as he banged into it. That won't feel great for his stiff lower back.
The Sox challenged the ruling that Jones was safe at second, and their challenge is successful.
Kevin McGonigle drops a single to left-center in his first career at-bat at Fenway, quickly followed by Jahmai Jones banging a double off the Wall in left-center against Suarez.
