"war of choice" is a great term. I highly recommend to read @sethabramson.bsky.social take on how this war is personal to Trump and has been long in the making (as he himself just announced). He betrails the MAGA movement for basically revenge thirst and delusion of what it means to be powerful.
Unless it falls? There are close to zero chances that if (big if) it falls, there will be a) a new stable regime b) that is friendly with the West and c) that will give up the nuclear program.

7/ My assessment as his biographer is that at this point only one thing can stop a war with Iran that will define the next two decades of US foreign policy and cause countless deaths around the world: if the MAGA base so loudly yells about this that Trump worries his entire movement could collapse.
