THIS! I’ve lived rural, urban, and suburban. Rural folks were extremely tribal, hated outsiders, and resented anyone not them. The work “Stuck” comes to mind. Suburban wanted to ignore the other two and live in la-la land. Urban: community in bumpy flux. Shared space. Finding ways to get along.

“Do you think they’re paid?” stood out as a uniquely insane phrase. Were asked to empathize with rural people with Fox News brain even as they can’t consider the essential humanity of people living in cities.

“Do you think they are paid” is a summation of everything wrong with a large plurality of voters in this country.

The thought that regular Americans are upset armed government agents are kidnapping and killing their neighbors never crosses their mind.
