It was an honor to meet Senator Bernie Sanders at NYC DSA's Tax the Rich rally on Sunday! New York State has the wealth to fund what we need. We need to TAX THE RICH ✊🏽

While Trump is eroding civil liberties, NYC cannot expand police discretion over when and where people can speak and organize. Today I voted against two bills that would require the police to plan buffer zones where protest would be restricted outside of schools and houses of worship.
Started this week at the preliminary budget hearing for the Committee on Sanitation and Solid Waste Management. I was proud to hear about the progress in our composting program. Commissioner Lojan reports that the program has reached its highest compost collection tonnage to date.

Grateful to join a roundtable with some of our city’s diverse Muslim leaders to discuss confronting Islamophobia and expanding access to halal food. Always honored to show up for and alongside my community. Thank you, @speakermenin.bsky.social, for hosting ahead of Ramadan.
Happy Lunar New Year to everyone across District 39 and New York City!🧧
As we welcome the Year of the Fire Horse, may it spark the courage, momentum, and bold transformation our communities deserve. May this year bring joy, abundance, and renewed purpose.
Our office will be closed and we will be fully remote for the rest of the week. We hope to have our heating resolved and be back in person ASAP!
Call us at (718) 499 - 1090 or email district39@council.nyc.gov for any concerns.
Loved spending time with PS 179 5th graders for Career Day! Growing up in Kensington and returning to share my story––and what it means to serve as their Council Member––is an honor. I hope they know the sky’s the limit. You can be from here and make it anywhere.
Our office heat isn't working today so we had to close early.
We're fully available remotely—call us at (718) 499-1090 or email district39@council.nyc.gov.
If your heat isn't working, file a 311 complaint at portal.311.nyc.gov, and let us know!
On Holocaust Remembrance Day, we honor the six million Jews and the millions of others murdered by the Nazis. We remember, we mourn, and we recommit to fighting antisemitism, hatred, and fascism—so “never again” truly means never again.
Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse, was murdered by ICE today. This agency only exists to terrorize us. We must abolish ICE and we must demand nothing less from those who represent us.
I was delighted to present CB7 District Manager Jeremy Laufer with a proclamation thanking him for his 25 years of service to the community! Jeremy has led one of the most engaged and effective CB’s in NYC with integrity, dedication, and commitment that has shaped our neighborhoods.
Section 3 is an essential program that ensures low income workers are being hired for federal contracts in their own neighborhood. Last wee we launched the Gowanus Model Section 3 Initiative in partnership with the National Institute for Section 3 Empowerment (NISE).
Loved getting to watch kids at PS 230 make digital beats through LEAP (Learning through an Expanded Arts Program)’s inclusion-funded afterschool digital music production program. I’m proud to fund this music program that helps kids create together and have fun! 🎶
I was so grateful to welcome my sister and mentor, Dr. Debbi Almontaser, to our Chambers as she delivered the invocation at our first Stated Meeting of the year, during Muslim American Heritage Month. Thank you @speakermenin.bsky.social for working with me to make this possible!
This #MuslimHeritageMonth, I was honored to welcome my sister and mentor Dr. Debbie Almontaser to City Council Chambers to deliver the invocation at our first Stated Meeting of the year. Thank you @speakermenin.bsky.social for honoring our faith and making this possible.
Thank you @speakermenin.bsky.social for entrusting me to chair @council.nyc.gov's newly created Committee on Disability.
I was 17 when I was diagnosed with lupus. That’s when I learned how many New Yorkers are pushed to the margins—not by choice, but by policy and infrastructure failures.
I’m thrilled that Professor James DeFillippis, a Board Member of the Columbia Street Waterfront Association, has been appointed to the BMT Development Corporation! His leadership is essential to ensuring our community’s voices are heard and reflected in decision-making.
ICE snatched a NYC Council staffer following the law—going to a routine immigration appointment. This is an attack on due process, on our city, and on every immigrant here. Release them now.
NYC can & must end the subminimum wage for tipped restaurant workers! We need to pass NYC’s Outdoor Dining bill. It’s good for workers & restaurants. Read more from me, @bradlander.bsky.social, & Saru Jayaraman of One Fair Wage: www.nydailynews.com/2025/12/23/n...

Loved joining Dances for a Variable Population at the Eileen Dugan Senior Center for Dances for Seniors! 💃🏾This program allows arts, movement, and community care to support physical health, mental well-being, and joy. Proud to champion D39 seniors and ensure community support.
So happy to host two wonderful toy giveaways in our NYCHA community this weekend, at Wyckoff Gardens and at the new and finally open Gowanus Houses Community Center! Nothing better than spending the holiday season in community and spreading love and joy ❤️
My colleague Vickie Paladino continues to dehumanize the over 1 million Muslim New Yorkers that the NYC Council represents. It is time that the Council takes action and expels her. We cannot allow such flagrant racism within our legislative body. My full remarks:
Stated thread! 🧵
At today’s NYC Council Stated meeting, we passed two crucial bills that protect gig workers—-both Deliveristas and Uber & Lyft drivers. Although these workers are often full time, apps use “gig” status to get around our basic labor protections.
Rallied with @nytwa.bsky.social and @workersjusticep.bsky.social to pass two essential bills protecting Uber & Lyft drivers and deliveristas from unjust firing and arbitrary app deactivations. Our city’s immigrant workers deserve dignity and the same labor protections afforded to all New Yorkers.
Overjoyed to stand with @bradlander.bsky.social to share my endorsement of his run for NY-10! Brad is the principled fighter & fearless leader who will represent our communities with integrity in Congress. I’ve been honored to work with him for years and look forward to continuing that work.
I proudly rallied with the NYC Council Union against unjust firings. Before being elected, I served as a Council staffer, and I know firsthand how essential staff are to making city government work for New Yorkers. Workers deserve dignity, due process, and full respect for their contract.
I was proud to join Our Time at the Tax the Rich field kickoff — organizing to advance Zohran Mamdani’s bold vision for an affordable New York. By taxing the ultra-wealthy and big corporations, we can fund free universal childcare and protect New Yorkers from federal cuts.
