Pennsylvania's motor-voter system effectively screens non-citizens from voter registration • Pennsylvania Capital-Star The audit also revealed problems with PennDOT’s data security protocols and recommended tighter internal controls.

Pennsylvania's auditor general, a Republican, audited 210,000+ new voter registrations under Gov. Shapiro's new motor voter system to see if noncitizens were registering to vote.

They found one. One.

And that was because a PennDOT staffer erred. It was fixed before the driver left the office.

I would pay at least as much for this as I would the average Cambridge University Press hardcover. So a lot, truthfully

“It’s a couple of things that work beautifully in concert. First: no music. Audiences are so sophisticated, but what they’re not accustomed to is not being told how to feel,” Wyle says. “You take all that out and it forces a level of engagement where you’re now looking for clues within the frame of the screen, which forces you to look up from your phone. And I think that is extremely engaging, especially to young viewers who aren’t accustomed to being asked to participate in a nonpassive way in the viewing experience.

“Second point, shooting it with almost exclusively 50-millimeter or 65-millimeter lenses, which is the most comparable to the human eye—and only shooting from the point of view of a human being that’s present in this space. There are no cameras on gurney wheels going in the hallway. There’s no cameras on the ceiling looking down from a God point of view. You are limited to the perspective of a participant. You can look away, but you can’t leave, and it becomes an endurance test for you to stay on your feet as long as we’re on our feet. Which [brings me to my] third point: real time. Real time has an aggregate sense of tension that you don’t get in any other form of storytelling. What happened before is happening now, and these two things are going to add up to the next thing. And if we throw more ingredients into this cooker and keep ratcheting it up, it’s going to pop.”

Wyle makes eye contact for his next point, delivering it with a Robby-esque matter-of-factness. “Fourth point: The election went the other way,” he says with a shrug. “We could have been a really good show with a lot of nice things to say in a perfectly normal Kamala Harris universe. And instead we became almost a beacon of hope and humanity in an alternative universe. But in the midst of that, fifth point—this is essentially competence porn. You’re watching really smart, dedicated people do what only they know how to do at a level that you don’t know how to do it, and you’re so fucking glad that they’re there doing it, and compartmentalizing their own stuff to put your broken pieces back together. You’re so reassured by knowing that there are people out there that laugh and joke and have the ability to lock in like that.”

I have, in fact, noticed more and more that my students very often use the word “bias” on what they mean is “having a clear perspective or opinion, however well-informed”. Goes hand-in-hand with their (perfectly understandable) tendency to over-blame the media for things like polarization.

There is no "cancel elections" button in the Oval Office, and while Trump/GOP attempts to mess with elections can potentially matter on the margins, Dem wins in state & local office help protect the next rounds of elections.

The specific allegations against Swalwell aside….this response reflects a very pervasive (but wrong) belief. Most sexual violence is relational and survivors keeping contact w/ their assailants is very common and not necessarily discrediting (esp when there’s a power imbalance)

i feel like i'm stating the obvious here, but the 2028 democratic nominee is pretty clearly going to be lincoln chafee. over the last 20 years he's run for office as a republican, an independent, a democrat, and a libertarian. he's the lord of politics. all of this is little more than a coronation

In this case, those drawing a line in the sand against Platner b/c of his past do have to face the fact that Platner appears to be more likely to win! My point is usually that choice isn't necessary, and is inconvenient no matter how you slice it, and is why this one is tricky for the Blueskyers.

Or all of the above! But like, the GOP nominated a bunch of election deniers in 2022; they lost bad, and polls said they would, but they nominated them anyway. Call that ideological extremism or something else, but it fit the standard trope of "out of the ordinary candidate = less likely to win".

1 week ago 2 0 1 0

Both mainstream, party-centric Democrats, along with "Pure electability" Democrats, really must acknowledge that Platner is clearly in a better position right now, and also wrestle with his obvious weaknesses as a candidate. Also want to be clear that I'm not expressing any personal preference here.

But it turns out that, at least according to basically every poll I've seen of this race, those not okay with Platner's past don't have the "he's unelectable" leg to stand on. And those who typically argue "we have to nominate whoever can win no matter what" are in more of a pickle than usual.

Often if a candidate has extreme views or a tricky past, they can be ignored by the party thanks to electability. It's a very tidy "out" the party has to write off non-traditional candidates. And I think it's fair to say many of us were expecting Mills to perform better against Collins heads-up.

1 week ago 1 0 1 0

One reason the whole Platner/Mills situation is so bewildering to so many, esp. on here, is it scrambles the usual configuration of "ideological outlier would be nice/fun, but is unelectable."

Also, my suspicion would be that Dems are just more likely than Republicans to be double haters to begin with, no?
