I trust there are no holes in that deal 🤭

I have done some volunteer work with unhoused people, and when I talk to others who have never experienced that, I notice a few common misconceptions:

--it doesn't happen to people who work hard
--if they wanted a job / house, they'd have one
--it's their choice to (ab)use drugs or alcohol

From Mal.briggs

What if I told you that getting $200 for passing GO in Monopoly is an example of a universal basic income and at no stage does it discourage any player from investing to increase their earning potential.

If you get money outside of labour like a GST cheque, do you think of it differently?
No, it's just added to the rest and is used to improve your situation.
If "go" space in Monopoly was removed, the game would grind to a halt pretty quick

Same idea with #BasicIncome

UBI basically pays for itself and offers more. By reducing poverty and inequality, it boosts economic growth and lowers social service costs. Ripple effects extend to individual well-being and stronger communities, making it not just a safety net but an investment in our future.

The phrase "money doesn't buy happiness" is incredibly misleading. Yes, technically, happiness is not something you can go out and buy. And there is a point at which more money will mean diminishing returns in terms of day-to-day fulfillment. But money buys stability, relaxation, the ability to focus on what you want, free time, help with various life tasks. It means that an unexpected expense won't spiral into a dismantled life. It means peace of mind about the future. It means options. So don't let people who have all those things try and tell you that they aren't the foundation that allows you to build happiness--because that's simply a lie.

"For most people who are broke, money will literally solve every one of their problems," Casey Neistat

There was an interview with Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan where he said something like "you get to a place where you have so much money that there's nothing left you can really buy."

Honestly really needed this today, it's a mindset shift that I really want to try and adopt.

Our incredibly informed world makes it hard to see the good, but maybe, you need to reframe the baseline.

If someone with no education who can't speak English is able to walk across the border and take your job, we need to have a serious conversation about upgrading your job skills.

A big reason why I first began understanding what a universal basic income could do for people was the many mental illness support groups that i went to in NYC from 2006-2012. All any of us really needed was money to get back on our feet after we fell. it's not enabling, it's empowering.

It is indeed, and one we need to keep reminding ourselves of, and practicing, in the face of the challenges we’ll be facing in the future.

True. We’re humans serving the needs of other humans, in exchange for having our own needs served, and need to feel pride in our work. Sadly that’s been forgotten, for the most part, in this soulless money-serving world. We need to feel valued and appreciated or we lose our motivation.

Opinion | If My Dying Daughter Could Face Her Mortality, Why Couldn’t the Rest of Us? (Gift Article) A bereaved mother’s case against our grief-phobic culture.

"I keep coming back to something Wendy Lichtenthal, a lead author of the Lancet paper, told me: Our culture has a profound lack of 'grief literacy.'”

Thank you for kindly gift-sharing this excellent thought-provoking article. We do need to talk more about this and accept mortality with more grace.

Why is happiness so elusive?

Because you look for it in the future instead of the present

The same for emissions reductions…

When I was over (there) I lived in this make-believe world, where a majority of the people I interacted with every day agreed with me that the only way to reduce emissions is to do less and do it slower.
I had about 25K alleged "followers," but disregarding the fakes and idles, almost all agreed.

Slowing down and scaling down is the only practical way to do it. Sorrowfully, that’s seen as a frightening prospect by so many.

Luckily I only have to write my posts, not read them. I think having to read them would annoy the fuck out of me. Apologies to you all.

COP29 was like bad sex. People went through the motions but the earth didn’t move. We will just have to achieve extinction on our own.

It is about dominance not building common understanding.
