That shift from social networking to consuming so-called social media was really a shift nobody asked for.

This is the experience of so many people who say they hate Toronto. Living in Toronto is very different than driving through or even into.

It’s super depressing! Because they aren’t learning and practising these skills, which is the whole point of being in school. It’s like investing time and money into going to the gym only to use a forklift to lift your weights when you’re there. And then calling yourself a weightlifter.

This is so embarrassing because rats don’t even live that long so this will only affect future generations

Biked through 17C rain this evening. I would way rather bike through a snow storm. -1C would have been a much nicer ride. People who don’t ride and make statements against winter cycling don’t understand this.

Coach House Press | Brick I was a student at the University of Toronto and was writing poetry and got a call from a place called Coach House Press, who asked if I had perhaps a book of poetry they could publish. They had…

The first page had a poem called “I send you a picture of Billy . . .” and above it there was a photo of him. bpNichol was strolling by; he looked at it quickly and just said: “Keep the lines, but take out the photo—let the reader imagine him.” I took his advice.

So what SHOULD we do? Ban things that are provably bad. And use consumer-facing information like labels to focus on the nutritional properties of individual foods (something like the Nutri-Score label in Europe).

People Love to Blame “Ultra-Processed Food.” It’s Unhelpful. A new bill proposed in California misses the point: The reason not to eat junk food has more to do with what’s in it than how processed it is.

New legislation proposed in California would certify foods as not being ultra-processed. It's a bad idea.

We should be using the regulatory state to improve diets, but by focusing on the specifics of nutrition and not on broad generalizations.

My latest for TNR.

Okay but there must be things you hate more? Such as overly literal readings of idioms?

a broken up piece of road next to the sidewalk.

People on bikes aren’t swerving to annoy drivers, they’re just trying not to die or destroy their mode of transportation.
This is generally what the bike portion looks like of our “shared” roads. Glorious.

Which kind of spring person are you:

• April is the cruellest month
• Whan that Aprille with his shoures soote
• Nothing is so beautiful as Spring –
When weeds, in wheels, shoot long and lovely and lush;

I think those are the only options?

Nothing I have seen has been shifting my view that while school is for learning how to think, AI is for teaching people thinking is too hard. They have contrary goals.

Do you ever feel incredible and happy and wonder why and after a moment’s self-reflection realize that not only is life beautiful (it is! ah, the rain in Toronto!) but also that you just finished a double long espresso and it might just be the caffeine

An AI Upheaval Is Coming for Media. This Journalist Is Already All In. AI-assisted stories accounted for nearly 20% of Fortune’s web traffic in the second half of 2025. Most are written by Nick Lichtenberg.

Fortune should be mortified—"A story by Lichtenberg sometimes starts with a prompt entered into Perplexity or Google’s NotebookLM, asking it to write something based on a headline he comes up with. He moves the initial drafts into a content-management system and edits the stories before publishing."

I was told there's no biking in Toronto for eight months of the year, so this data must be faulty. Hope it's corrected.

Do drivers realize when a cyclist catches up to them (at the light or stop sign) after they dangerously close-pass them a sidestreet that they didn't save any time by scaring and endangering that cyclist?
