Brooklyn streets should be safer and easier to get around by bus and bike. @cmcrystalhudson.bsky.social, @chiosse.bsky.social, @cmrestler.bsky.social, and @bkbpreynoso.bsky.social all agree:
It's time to redesign Dekalb and Lafayette for people.

We are thankful for the support of @cmcrystalhudson.bsky.social, @chiosse.bsky.social, @lrestler.bsky.social, and @bkbpreynoso.bsky.social. We hope that @mayor.nyc.gov and @nyc-dot.bsky.social will consider a strong plan that prioritizes safety and people over parked cars on Dekalb and Lafayette!
These are critical east/west routes, but have long been plagued by car traffic, double parking, and slowdowns to the B38 buses which are relied upon by thousands of people. Additionally, the heavily used bike lane is frequently blocked by double parking.
We have been fighting to make this corridor safer for years, and over 1300 neighbors have signed our petition in support. You can show your support here: act.transalt.org/a/clinton-hi...
Last month we sent a letter to the @mayor.nyc.gov and
@nyc-dot.bsky.social urging them to prioritize a people first redesign of Dekalb and Lafayette, providing faster buses, safe east/west bike routes, and safer intersections. Our local elected officials joined in signing.
For more on the history of this proposed network and DOT's delays, see this thread we posted last year. We're looking forward to finally seeing these improvements on our streets!

We're also pleased to see commitment to acting on other long-delayed projects. The delays we've seen in this project aren't unique to this neighborhood. The same pattern has happened around the city in recent years.

Screenshot of NYT article: Mr. Mamdani is also expected to announce that the city will build a bike lane network through the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Midwood, Flatbush and East Flatbush, and add protected lanes to Dorchester and Cortelyou Roads in Ditmas Park, and along Brooklyn and Kingston Avenues, also in Brooklyn. “These projects will improve the quality of life for so many New Yorkers — but until today many were stalled because of politics,” said Mike Flynn, the city’s new transportation commissioner, in a statement. “This is just the beginning.”
We are excited to hear that @mayor.nyc.gov is prioritizing the long-delayed bike lane network in Flatbush, East Flatbush, and Midwood. We have been advocating for this network for years, both to protect cyclists and to improve safety for all road users in our neighborhoods.

We care deeply that cyclists have a network of safe routes to get around the city, and that includes keeping them free of overhanging branches!
Bedford Ave is an important route in Brooklyn, that was unfortunately trimmed by a few blocks under the previous mayor! Here's to hoping the full project grows back soon??

TABK members were out yesterday trimming trees along the Bedford Ave protected bike lane! Citizen Pruners can legally help keep our trees in good shape :) The people care about this bike lane!! @nyc-dot.bsky.social @nycgovparks.org @nyc.streetsblog.org @chiosse.bsky.social @mayor.nyc.gov
Court Street rocks!!
We're really disappointed to hear that the bike lane network in Community District 14, including protected bike lanes on Cortelyou and Dorchester Roads, will not be installed this year as DOT originally presented. We're hearing they're targeting installation for next year.
Slide from NYC DOT presentation titled "Safety Benefits of Protected Bike Lanes": Street designs that include Protected Bike Lanes increase safety for all users. 15% decrease in all crashes with injuries 15% decrease in motor vehicle occupant crashes 21% decrease in pedestrian injuries Injuries to cyclists increase only 3%, despite a 61% bike volume increase Data from 25 separate protected bicycle lane projects installed from 2007-2014 with 3 years of after data. Includes portions of 1 Ave, 2 Ave, 8 Ave, 9 Ave, Broadway, Columbus Ave, Hudson St, Lafayette St / 4 Ave, Sands St, Allen/Pike St, Kent Ave, Prospect Park West, Flushing Ave, Bruckner Blvd & Longfellow Ave, Imlay St / Conover St, Paerdegat Ave. Only sections of projects that included protected bike lanes were analyzed. Another neighbor has been killed on dangerous Morgan Avenue Join us for a Candlelight Vigil and Community Speakout Friday, August 8th - 7pm Morgan Avenue between Metropolitan & Sharon
On Wednesday, a pedestrian was struck and killed by a box truck on Morgan Ave near Cooper Park.
Members of the community are gathering tonight for an emergency action in response to this tragedy - both to honor the life lost and to call on the city to take urgent steps to make Morgan Ave safe.
Me holding my brompton with a flat back tire in the middle of the narrow Brooklyn Bridge two-way bike path. There's no longer space for two way bike travel.
It's really hazardous how narrow the new Brooklyn Bridge bike lane is when you get a flat in the middle of the bridge like I just did, cc @nyc.streetsblog.org @tabk.bsky.social @bikenewyork.bsky.social
There's not space to walk the bike to somewhere safe to fix it alongside two-way bike travel.
Streetsblog made a great video explaining why there's a gap in the bike lane on Ashland Place! #crashland
We're gonna keep fighting until we get this fixed! You can show your support here: tiny.cc/closethegap
Happy to see @bradlander.bsky.social and @davecolon.bsky.social highlight #Crashland!
"Lander noted the chaos the Adams approach brought as he biked down Ashland Place ... where City Hall chose backroom lobbying from real estate interests over safety."

The hearing for @cmjuliewon.bsky.social's Intro 1138 to make universal daylighting the law in NYC is one week away! I'm thrilled that my representative CM Hudson sponsors this bill — and I look forward to seeing her fight to get it across the finish line. NYC needs universal daylighting!
We're just a week away from @council.nyc.gov's hearing on Intro 1138 to make universal daylighting the law in NYC. Thank you council member @cmshahanahanif.bsky.social for sponsoring this bill — NYC needs universal daylighting!
TABK was out this weekend in support of closing the gap Ashland/Navy protected bike lane! We demand @nyc-dot.bsky.social finish the last block of this project on Ashland Pl between Lafayette and Flatbush this year. Please sign our petition here: tiny.cc/closethegap #crashland

@nyc.streetsblog.org wrote up the situation on Ashland, where the city is still failing to complete the Ashland Pl protected bike lane, despite strong unanimous support from local electeds and the community board: nyc.streetsblog.org/2025/04/03/c...

@nyc-dot.bsky.social must commit to true streetscape improvements on Atlantic Ave as @chiosse.bsky.social and CM Hudson insisted at this week's Council hearing! @sophlebo.bsky.social continues her great coverage of AAMUP in @nyc.streetsblog.org: nyc.streetsblog.org/2025/03/28/c...
We will continue to push for this project to be completed, people in downtown Brooklyn and Fort Greene deserve this and we hope the @nyc-dot.bsky.social will complete the full project! Please watch for how you can support in coming weeks, and sign our petition: tiny.cc/closethegap
The 2022 design also included significant safety improvements for pedestrians and cyclists on Hanson Place, between the Atlantic Center and the One Hanson Place. They proposed increasing pedestrian space, which today is usually occupied by double parking and lots of traffic:
This is a busy intersection where people usually outnumber cars! Happy to see them voice support for a safer, more vibrant Downtown Brooklyn, and closing a critical gap in the connection from the 4th ave protected bike lane to the new protected lanes on Ashland and Navy.
