We hope this meeting will repeat on a 3-year basis, before every SfN in DC, so if you miss the first one, come for the next one!!!
Bring your trainees (a poster session is planned) and enjoy the beautiful Fall weather and cozy meeting atmosphere before getting exhausted in DC 🤩
Come to Charlottesville just a day before (Friday)-land in DC and take a train ride or an easy, traffic-free scenic drive to Charlottesville to see, hear and/or meet all these peeps and more: neuroscience.virginia.edu/index.php/vi...
For all the vision folks who are planning to go to DC SfN this year: we now have a Vision pre-meeting!!!
New paper (with lots of cute animal videos!)
Ever watch your dog "run" while asleep and wonder what’s going on in their brain? In Current Bio we suggest that those twitches aren't just leaky dreams—they’re a vital maintenance system for the most precise movements

Looking to improve your PeerReview skills? The Reviewer Mentor Program pairs trainees with #JNeurosci & #eNeuro editors & top reviewers to conduct strong manuscript reviews. Open to SfN members at any career stage: http://www.jneurosci.org/rmp
We have followed this up on many levels-preprints coming soon. This one spent a long time cooking and I am grateful to my lab, the #NIMH, UVA and the Owens Foundation for funding support, and the reviewers for their time and critical insights 🙏
Lo and behold, while there are overall differences in firing rates, the representation of task cues and encoding of behavioral outcomes is very similar between term adolescent and preterm adult mice, indicating that preterm birth disrupts PFC maturation
Then we ran into a preprint describing the cue representation in adolescent PFC: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
and decided to compare the PFC of adult preterm mice to adolescent term mice in our task
We found that preterm mice make more errors during task performance, even when trained to the expert level. Their V1 seems fine-ish, so we checked the PFC next and found a blunted response to the non-rewarded cue
New paper alert! The latest from my lab describing atypicalities in the processing of cues in the PFC and V1 of preterm mice trained on a visual discrimination task: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Congrats again, great to see this!
I have seen too many junior-to-mid career people making this mistake so I need to get this message out there:
Once you get your first big award (R01, CAREER, standard NSF, BL2 DoD), your most important task is to publish papers that cite that grant for support.

📈🧠 We're looking for brains! 🧠📈
Postdoc + PhD positions are available to help pioneer fetal MEG with optically pumped magnetometers, measuring prenatal responses to sound and light to understand how we start making sense of the world even before we're born. 🐣

🚨 2 Postdoc openings in Neuroscience – Liège, Belgium 🚨
We are recruiting for a project on brain development & autism that includes:
⚡ Neuropixels recordings
⚡ Opto/chemo
⚡ Behavior
⚡ Neural network modeling
If you know someone, tag them or RT for visibility! 🙏

Thanks to the support of the F.R.S. - FNRS, I’m hiring two postdocs to help kickstart the lab. Informal inquiries are welcome via socials or email.
More about the two postdoc positions and how to apply: www.chinilab.com/opportunitie...
RT for visibility are greatly appreciated! 🙏
Mattia, congratulations, amazing news!! Can't wait to have you over for a talk!
She was a true scientist, with unparalleled tenacity and an open mind. May she rest in peace. Now go and buy her book: www.bloomsbury.com/us/manufactu...
wrote her Wikipedia biography: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jill_Vi... which I checked today to make sure it's still there. I was saddened to find that her entry has been edited to insert the date of her death.
I came back from my stint in Bosnia to find a handwritten thank you card from Jill Viles (for writing a blurb for her memoir)-if you don't know who she is, look her up. My Hidden Figures class interviewed her last year and www.conjugate.blog/figures/epis...
We are still recruiting for a lab tech position, as well as for a postdoc position-small lab, mice+human ephys, neurodevelopment-DM for details!
No cushion here, not even for a month-with 3 kids in tow, we can just sell our house and move to Bosnia
I don't think anyone is unaware. Most people (young PIs) I know that don't think their labs will weather the next few years are trying to run their labs while looking for alternatives and making sure their people get paid. Spending time on anything but that may seem wasteful
Thanks Alex! It was a long obstacle course so far, I hope the terrain gets a bit smoother now 😊
Our lab is recruiting a postdoc to join a project that studies the activity in the neonate brain (mouse and human !)
