Without an El Niño, global Sea Surface Temperatures are already at record high levels.

The heatwave in the Gulf of California and off the Mexico coast is quite something!

Adam McKay's new movie offers a glimpse at advertising's final frontier: your dreams ‘You Need This’ is a timely doc about consumerism. Producer Adam McKay, director Ryan Andrej Lough, and scientist Adam Haar Horowitz reveal how far brands will go to capture your attention.

"The section about how brands are using recent research to incept ads within [our] dreams stands out for its reckless goal of gaining entry into the most intimate of private spaces. It’s perhaps the most striking aspect of a stomach-churning tour through the excesses of unconstrained consumerism."

3 Million Year Climate Secrets: What the Past Teaches Us YouTube video by Climate Chat

Until very recently we only had ice core data on CO₂ and methane concentrations for the past 800,000 years.

Ground breaking work by scientists now provides us with insight into the atmosphere of 3 million years ago!

We talked about this on Climate Chat:

Climate Prediction Center - Relative Oceanic Niño Index (RONI) Warm value: The three month running average where the Relative Oceanic Niño Index (RONI) is greater than 0.5 degrees Celsius (El Niño).

Good point.
Peak is generally around December:

Your periodic reminder that 'Don't look up' 🎬 is a documentary.

It covers the (criminal!) gross negligence of politicians, media, AND scientists when facing a global existential threat.

Remember:

"People don't vote on climate"

"Let's end with something positive!"

"The truth is bad enough"

🤦‍♂️

Is anyone still claiming that this is merely natural variability?

Green line graph time series of average sea surface temperature anomalies for each March from 1854 through 2026 for only the midlatitude region of the North Pacific Ocean. There is large interannual variability, but an overall long-term increasing trend. Anomalies are computed relative to a 1981-2010 baseline. 2026 is a record high.

Record high ocean temperatures are back across the North Pacific when looking at March 2026 in the historical record for that month.

This graph shows the average for a band across the midlatitudes for every March from 1854-2026 using
NOAA ERSSTv5 data (psl.noaa.gov/data/gridded...).

Will we get a "Super-duper" El Niño this year?

Maybe!

On one 'side' we have NASA, NOAA, WMO and most of the published scientific research showing acceleration in global heat uptake, on the other 'side' we have a few who keep denying acceleration on blogs and social media channels.

The media and some scientists treating these as equal makes it heated.

The context is a blog Zeke wrote on methane where he stated:

"a number of climate scientists who should know better are defending it [20 year period for methane]."

Case in point, see this new Live Science article.

Note that neither Zeke or Gavin has ever published a peer reviewed study on the effects of shipping desulphurization.

I merely ask journalists to focus on the real science and ask the actual authors and subject experts for feedback, if they have questions.
