Failure to file penalty | Internal Revenue Service Calculate, pay or remove the Failure to File Penalty when you don’t file your tax return by the due date.

A screenshot of the IRS website. The text reads: "How we calculate the penalty

The penalty is 5% of the tax due (less any tax paid on time and available credits) for each month or partial month the return is late. The penalty accrues up to a maximum of 25%.

We calculate the failure to file penalty in this way:

Tax required to be shown on the return,
Less any tax paid on time (example: withholding credits or estimated tax payments),
Less available refundable credits, then
Multiplied by 5% per month (up to 25%).
If the return is more than 60 days late, the minimum penalty is the amount listed below or 100% of the underpayment, whichever is less."

sorry I keep taxposting but jsyk you aren't assessed a penalty for filing late as long as there are no taxes owed after taking tax credits and prior payments (such as withholding) into account. 5% of $0 is still $0.

File your taxes for free | Internal Revenue Service Prepare and file your federal income tax return online for free. File at an IRS partner site with the IRS Free File Program or use Free File Fillable Forms. It's safe, easy and no cost to you.

and, while Direct File is no longer a thing (may it rest in peace), there are still a handful of free filing options that may also allow you to file your state return for free depending on certain criteria!

Estimated taxes | Internal Revenue Service Who must pay estimated taxes, how much to pay and when to pay them.

for those who owe this year, while this might not help right now, I definitely recommend reviewing this page on paying estimated taxes to possibly prevent you from owing in the future.

I've got so much more advice I'd like to share, and if I had the time/money/bandwidth I'd make a much more polished slideshow than what I had during my panel at AGDQ, or hell, even put together a video, but I hope this is at least a start for anybody who needed it.

lastly, I cannot stress enough how helpful and informative the IRS website actually is. you just gotta know what you're looking for, and be willing to do a little reading. I'm happy to help with that part if you need it.

hey with Tax Day around the corner this is your reminder that while I am not a CPA, my job does require me to know quite a bit about tax returns, so if we're mutuals feel free to message me (preferably on discord) with any questions, even the "dumb" questions. especially the "dumb" questions.

where entitled customers could afford to learn basic human decency, groups like the Terminally Onlineℒ️ could instead afford to learn how people get along and deal with conflict outside the scope of the internet. it's actually not normal to interpret everything in bad faith.
