Pilot has the largest nibs of all brands of vintage Japanese pocket pens. I recently discovered that my Posting nib writes a broader line when held at a low angle.

It is called grip section, or just section.
"Hooded" section pens could have internal collar with little dips that can be removed with the tips of blunt tweezers, or just a friction fit.
Nib may come out forward, or need to be pushed out back of section.

Some strategies I use for less reliability:
turning up jitter,
drawing with the clone tool,
noise filters, distort filters,
mean curvature blur.

If it measures 4.9 or 5 cm across at the tail and about 26cm long, it is a #5.

Misaligned nib:

Ink at base OK,
but see it butts against the section.
Having to prime the nib might mean
you need to remove the feed and nib,
then run a shim down the fissures of the feed
to remove blockage. Also brush with detergent.
Assure converter is attached securely.
Scratchy is likely misaligned nib.
