The Equipment Strategy
This is where it gets interesting. Two phases:
Phase 1: Buy conventional equipment (PVD, CVD, etch) from Tokyo Electron, Applied, Lam. Use it unconventionally to learn at scale.
Phase 2: Modify those tools, then eventually design proprietary equipment that's orders of magnitude faster.
He calls it the "Boring Company playbook." Can you modify fab tools for higher throughput? Yes. I've done it. Can you make them orders of magnitude faster while maintaining atomic-level precision at single-digit nanometer nodes?
That's not engineering. That's rewriting physics.
The Reality Check
When asked about building his own EUV lithography to bypass
ASML, he paused: "I don't know yet."
That's the right answer. ASML represents 20+ years of coordinated development. Even China with unlimited resources hasn't cracked this. If there's a floor to "we'll build it ourselves," EUV is it.

A full disc image of Earth, as seen from the Orion Crew Module. The planet is a pale blue, swirling with white clouds and glowing slightly lighter blue in place from reflected light. At lower left, a large brown landmass is Africa, with Spain and Portugal with twinkling lights where the planet curves. At top right, auroras glow in a thin green glow, just barely separated from the planet's surface. Earth is set against the black of space (pic: NASA/R.Wiseman)

More context on this #Artemis II image:

* This is the night side, lit by moonlight. You can see city lights in Spain & Portugal, & a sliver of day at lower right

* The Sun is entirely behind Earth, which makes it a kind of solar eclipse, but w/ Earth doing the eclipsing instead of the Moon:

Bluesky is having another of its fits of introspection. Why isn't Bluesky more diverse?

I usually don't indulge in that Discourse, but I'll make an exception today. I've had a bad week, and I think I can add some useful thoughts. 1/

Left: Minimal line art drawing of a cat that is enclosed in a pink rectangle. Label: Kitten is completely full of crimes

Right: the same cat art but twice the size. The same size rectangle covers only the bottom of the cat. Label: Adult cat contains the same amount of crimes but it does not dominate all of their behaviors

I was thinking about Dad today because it’s 9/11.

He came with us to Seoul when we picked up my eldest. Our first adoption. He hadn’t been since the army. ‘58. A lot fewer bullet holes and a lot more buildings, he said. We had a blast.

Political violence disproportionately hurts people with less power, not people with more power. Political violence will disproportionately hurt people of color and women and LGBTQ people. It’s not fair, but that’s the way it works. Celebrating political violence means at best indifference to that.

It's hard to draw conclusions just from these graphics, but it seems to imply significantly more planned capacity per venture capital invested for nuclear? Also geothermal wins in # of projects underway/completed, but that doesn't say anything about the capacity of those projects.

Seriously. You know who has *great* messaging? Cancer researchers! Literally curing cancer! Sells itself!

Still got fed to the DOGE woodchipper.

FEMA and the National Weather Service got fed to the DOGE woodchipper, too. Nobody thought poorly of them until the right did the thing they always do.

Why am I so unimpressed by these strikes? Israel and the US have failed to target significant elements of Iran's nuclear materials and production infrastructure. RISING LION and MIDNIGHT HAMMER are tactically brilliant, but may turn out to be strategic failures. 🧵 1/17

But it is hard to believe that Iran won't now focus on getting a nuclear weapon.

All we know is Trump's post, and now reports are coming in that there was bombing.

We're not going to know how much damage was done for some time. Tomorrow there may be satellite photos.

If a lot of bombs were dropped at Fordo, Natanz, and Esfahan, the Iranian nuclear program is down.

I've said this a million times, but the stuff the left did -- trying to marshal social pressure to disincentivize hateful speech -- is the *alternative* to using state force to suppress speech. It's how you try to shape values when you *do* value free speech. But elites hated being subject to it.

Op-Ed: A forgotten hero stopped the My Lai massacre 50 years ago today Everybody’s heard of the My Lai massacre — March 16, 1968, 50 years ago today — but not many know about the man who stopped it: Hugh Thompson, an Army helicopter pilot.

Read this but also even just the paragraph that starts “On the 30th anniversary of the massacre, Thompson went back to My Lai and met some of the people whose lives he had saved…”

Let’s talk for a moment about some of the more subtle ways that the press acts as a mouthpiece for law enforcement.

Actor Jonathan Joss was shot to death on Sunday. I don’t know what happened; I wasn’t there. But his husband said a homophobic neighbor shot him as part of an explicit hate crime.

I'm going to state something that's obvious at every university: today was the deadline for folks to decide which grad school they'll join in the fall.

This probably won't make headlines, but because we don't expect normal funding, universities aren't admitting a normal number of students.

Here’s The Full List Of Trump's Reciprocal Tariffs Announced Wednesday Reciprocal tariffs the U.S. is imposing on other countries will range from a flat 10% rate to 50%, President Donald Trump announced.

We are imposing tariffs on WHOLLY UNINHABITED antarctic islands in this list (Heard and McDonald). The administration asserts—and Forbes reprints this uncritically—those islands have charged 10% tariffs on US goods that it needs to respond to. www.forbes.com/sites/mollyb...

The government’s statement is a flex, not a confession of error. The important elements of the flex are these:

1. We send enemies to brutal foreign labor camps.
2. We decide who enemies are.
3. We may decide you are an enemy based on a secret informant, or our view of your tattoos.

Op-ed: Try again, President Kumar: Renewing calls for Tufts to adopt March 4 TCU Senate resolutions - The Tufts Daily The independent student newspaper of Tufts University

This is the op-ed Rumeysa Ozturk co-wrote in 2024 criticizing the Tufts administration’s response to student demands for action regarding Gaza and Israel. It is unquestionably speech protected by the First Amendment.

The Trump Administration Accidentally Texted Me Its War Plans U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat about upcoming military strikes in Yemen. I didn’t think it could be real. Then the bombs started falling.

Today's OPSEC lesson is this: all of the encryption in the world is not going to save you if you add the editor of The Atlantic to your war-planning Signal group chat.

US threatens permanent visa bans on trans athletes based on sex markers Exclusive: State department memo directs officers to bar those deemed to misrepresent birth sex on applications

This story is headlined as though the instructions to immigration officers are limited to visa applications from athletes, as opposed to all trans people, but they haven’t quoted the part of the state department cable that applies that limitation, if it exists. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

The root that tears apart your foundation begins as a seed of distrust, hate, and blame.

The seed that grew into a dictatorship in Europe didn’t arrive overnight.

It started with everyday Germans mad about inflation and looking for someone to blame.

We have been in this bizarre spiral my entire life:
1. Democrats ignore right-wing radicalization to focus on economic issues.
2. Right-wing media accuses Democrats of being out-of-touch leftist elites.
3. Centrist media repeats right-wing framing.
4. Democrats double down on economic issues.
