one of my little sketchbooks open on the table, the left sheet with 5 quick sketches of portraits, some copied from album covers, some copied from an old Rijksmuseum book. The right hand page has a made up landscape with sunset and church on the horizon, testing out some new colour pencils

A detail from my A3 pen, pencil, charcoal, and pastel drawing on paper. A yellow council grit bin, dirty, old and knocked out of shape, sits in front of a stone wall with an old concrete post to the left and pavement in the foreground. Only the bin is in colour.

A full view of my A3 size pen, pencil, and charcoal black and white drawing on paper, before the pastel colours went in. It's a council grit bin on a pavement in front of a stone wall with knackered fence, hedges and brick wall in the background.

and with just three pastel colours, my drawing of a sad grit bin starts to come to life

I can't begin to imagine what you must be feeling; what a gruelling time of life it can be. Keep the tiny positives in mind just for you, hopefully the little moments can carry you through it all

another photo of 'Pylons at Newburn' drawing, a pen and paper artwork I'm nearly finished with. I've taken a picture at an angle looking bottom right to top left of a bit of the cloudy sky and pylons

The current stage I'm up to with my pen on paper drawing of 'Pylons at Newburn', a landscape view looking south west from the north bank of the river Tyne. Two bare trees on either side of the foreground, then the river, with three pylons looming beyond the opposite riverbank. Black pen on white 8 by 6 inch paper.

same. I add it whenever I can but often forget. Overall, it seems there's plenty of opinions, like most things, but best to add at least something, even if that then isn't someone else's view of how to do it

Photo from the dining room, out of the window, towards a dark, menacing sky. There are rain drops on the outside of the glass, which I spent at least 5 minutes trying to get my shitty phone camera to focus on, so at least have the decency to read this alt text and give us a like or something for crying out loud.

My work in progress, a black and white pen drawing of a view across the river Tyne at Newburn. 2 bare trees in the foreground, the opposite bank, the scene fading the into the south. Haven't drawn the pylons yet; they'll be the stars of the show, maybe even with colour when I get that far into the drawing.

My two triptych pen drawings, the top one shown here is called Near Haugh Lane, a view of the back of a big old retail unit in Northumberland, England, split into three A6 panels as a nod to those old devotional triptychs in early christian art. There's wheelie bins (or dumpsters, if you like), the loading bay for the unit, overgrown trees and shrubs, and a sad looking car park for the garage in the background. The one below it, also of some town architecture in the north of England. On the left panel of this one, the boarded up and disused 1930s bus station. In the middle, the Edwardian gates to Sele Park, a formerly grand entrance that everyone walks past these days. On the right, the eastern end of an old ropery building constructed in about 1800, also boarded up, rotting and largely ignored. These two original pictures are for sale in my shop at www.schmattt.com
