Bittersweet news, but as Katie told me, “It is defined by the people who come here. … And I think that we’re just kind of the keepers of the house, and the community itself will define who we are and what we’ll become.” That was 15 years ago, and story still rings true: www.wbez.org/eight-forty-...

So, it’s a full-circle moment that Thurs, I have the honor of doing a fireside chat with Halla Tómasdóttir, President of Iceland, to discuss 50th anni of Iceland's women’s strike, its commitment to gender equality + the need for gender parity in music/creative fields to open the fest’s conference.

God, I love Florence + the Machine. Coincidentally saw them for the first time around this time in 2008 at Iceland Airwaves. She’s one of many powerful artists I’ve seen at the fest, which has made gender-equal and gender-inclusive lineups a priority since 2018.

it’s beyond comprehension that scenes like this have become routine in chicago.

masked soldiers are carelessly lobbing chemical weapons—that are banned from use during warfare—on random residential streets.

this is the third time feds have tear-gassed residents in chicago *this week!*

The vibes in Chicago right now are sort of like during the pandemic except if covid showed up in a random neighborhood every day and had to be driven off by everyone yelling at it

The incident is marks the third straight day that federal agents have deployed tear gas against Chicagoans and the seventh time in 22 days.

WGN-TV producer hires attorney to ‘pursue all legal avenues’ after ICE detention Debbie Brockman and her legal team “adamantly deny” allegations that she assaulted federal officers during an immigration enforcement action.

"If armed, masked, federal agents are snatching U.S. citizens off the street as they walk to work and throwing them in unmarked vehicles, you can only imagine what these agents must be willing to do to our immigrant neighbors and people who dare to speak out against them.”

Listen, I get all the fest/Lolla gripes (the bags under my eyes can attest). This year was special, even if you don't care for these artists. I cried in the midst of it. I grew up loving music + never saw people like myself on covers, stories, lineups. Representation matters, more so now than ever.
