Empowerment maybe. I wonder if losing that hasn’t helped over the years? Still, change may happen with you helping. Thanks++

Why is this Martin? This was a sector that saved so many lives, could have emerged heroic as they saved a generation. Why did they suddenly all decide to leave. Like winning the World Cup qualifiers and then all quitting!

Crazy. I swum across from Spain to Morocco when I was a student. We were told then that orcas were safe. I saw them on the swim- they were massive and just curious. But with 500 incidence of removing rudders from boats- good luck swimmers this summer!

10/x. do let me know how you feel. There's a number of possible views. 1- This is not best shared, 2-There should be debate, 3-Let's improve care, 4-give them the tools....

9/x. Our leadership are brave in raising these issues. They appear to have phrased a balanced ask and the first is just to meet and share their solutions.

8/x From my experience, I chaired & lead a session at the UK cancer forum. I talked to leaders/professionals across the UK and let them talk. Our professions are doing an incredible job in unusual times & experiencing pressures They are motivated to provide world-class care

7/x But there's more suggestions.... More cancer professionals and Ensure that funding matches demand. Potentially these two are less easy to deliver. for the cancer capacity challenge

6/x.1- to collect data, 2- tools- better IT and use of AI, 3- develop a strategy, 4-Care more about cancer, 5-reduce inequality in care, 6-make hospitals love their cancer centres... These all seem pretty easy...

5/x. However, they then share solutions. 8 solutions that they think are reasonable and fair. rcr.ac.uk/sites/default/files/the_... Let's see what they are asking for......

4/x. Our leaders are surprisingly honest and "share" some of the difficult coalface decisions that are happening. Like whether to withhold access, or prioritise who can receive treatment at a safe time at the expense of others.

2 years ago 0 0 1 0

3/x but.... there's a flipside. Our Cancer leadership quote "Demand for cancer treatment is increasing by approximately 6-8% every year" and "They are being asked to deliver more treatment with the same staffing numbers"

2/x What's the issue ? The UK delivers successful cancer care. Year on year, people live longer and better lives. gov.uk/government/news/cancer-s... 10% improved survival in 15 years. Achieved by early diagnosis, better treatment best cancer staff, research.

1/x The UK Cancer capacity challenge.
V. Relevant for those affected by cancer. It's interesting with good & also worrying stories.... From UK doctors, nurses, pharamcist. ft.com/content/b22e2195-5e28-4c... Like/share if it's interesting.

8/x @why.bsky.team- I hope that's a good overview of why science communication could benefit from this platform!

2 years ago 3 0 0 0

7/x I can't wait for bsky capabilities- post videos, threads and emoticons. And remember, contrary to other platforms, .... 1-eating "Cyanide" will not cure cancer" 2-covid vaccines won't cause you to will die horribly of cancer in the next fortnight, 3- we are not giving chemo to get free pens. :)

6/x I'm interested to see how Bluesky pans out and I'll give it a go. It's a promising start with minimal barriers to starting. I've been given the push by my friends at indieSAGE, the largest UK science public communication channel which formed during the pandemic. 4 of us have made the move.

5/x Not good things clearly. And for me, it's clear that harm is happening on other social media channels. As a cancer doctor, my job is to empower people do things to avoid cancer, and help them access cancer care. It's so difficult when as a doctor/scientist I'm pitted against algorithms/bots

4/x That's probably not a big deal when you're talking about your favourite sports team, or best superhero, but what happens when it comes to health issues? i.e. why you should disregard medical advice, what dose drugs to get, why you should not go to hospital. What happens then?

2 years ago 2 0 1 0

3/x And then based on initial views, people are placed in silos, where they will only hear certain views. It reinforces their initial views and nudges them to hearing more and more radical content. So the initial falsehood gets perpetuated as fact.

2 years ago 1 0 1 0

2/x by that I mean that on other platforms, the more outrageous, the more false, the more scary, the more extreme the post, the more you are boosted. #snakeoil science which is given the largest possible platform. So this means that falsehoods continue, and that's dangerous.

1/x Huh, a new social channel. Is this going to be useful for the public to access the best science communicators, like @duncanrobertson.bsky.social @trishgreenhalgh.bsky.social @sheencr.bsky.social?

I guess it's useful to know what problems scientists need bsky to fix? It's the algorithms....

Hi, glad to join from independentSAGE. Excited to see what this is about! Glad to bring common sense advice about science to the room!
