Unsolicited advice: build neighborhoods with space to play, hang out, and chat with the neighbors.

8 months ago 1 0 1 0

Smart cities know that, as hot as they already are, theyโ€™re just going to keep getting hotter. Greening the city not only cools it down, it cleans the air, quiets the noise, improves mental health & happiness, saves public money, & more. Strand Aldwych, London. 2021 vs. 2025. A street doesn't have to be dominated by (parked) cars. New design principles offer space for more trees, plants, and increased water retention.

In 1984 the junction is dominated by parked cars, today all car parking has been removed, replaced by greenery and seating. An empty plot of land has had a block of flats built on it

People of all ages and abilities walk, cycle, sit, and socialise on the Strand Aldwychโ€”a former arterial turned pedestrian zone in London, which is lined with buildings, trees, flowers and plantings, benches, and terraces.

Leveraging London's streets as one of its most valuable assets, Strand Aldwych transforms one of Westminster's busiest and most polluted corridors into a vibrant and verdant destination. By filtering out through traffic, 7000 mยฒ of roadway is reclaimed into an accessible and welcoming public space.๐Ÿงต

In 1992 there are bollards to stop footway parking and cars parked on the road. Today there is no car parking, replaced by trees and lots of greenery. People walk in the middle of the road due to the lack of motor traffic

Good news: it's possible to envision a city that accommodates essential car traffic while simultaneously providing space for cycling, walking, outdoor play, socializing, and green spaces. A city that is equitable and accessible, healthy and thriving.
