Best “Ass Deans” moment of my time here is when a dean wanted to empower women more by…creating a new college committee and making it all women.

So many people have a bitter taste in their mouth about economics because their first class just became an algebra class. My intro prof in college had almost no math other than calculating elasticities, and focused solely on intuition. This is the way.

Fogelman College - Department of Economics

I love how our college redid every department's website with random pictures that do not depict our students, what they do, or how they dress. www.memphis.edu/economics/

One thing I've learned from teaching where I do is that teaching economics with basically no math at all (even for seniors) is challenging at times, but mostly fun and rewarding. It really rewards being able to explain intuition and use fun examples, which is great and more people should do it.

Does he realize there’s a whole thing called being Protestant where you can disregard everything the Pope says?

We need a name for research that is still done the old-fashioned way without all these AI tools. My coauthor suggests “artisanal research”.

Yesterday I got to speak to the undergrad Economics Club. It was so nice to be in a room full of interested students with questions. Really rewarding. I don't get that enough.

It seems somehow more defensible in Tampa than at Yankee Stadium.

Ding ding. The bar area to be more specific. The hotel is shut down, it's now temporary FCBE (but no classes, those are scattered around campus).

It's legitimately the best place in Memphis. Like a way better park than you'd expect us to have.

I mean...we go to this playground, and it was the middle of the day. It's horrifying. A few times a year I think about moving, and this is one of them.

Dan, you might appreciate my current office as FCBE is renovated. (Bonus if you can tell me where this is)

I had a paper that was basically just one figure and the text felt superfluous. Spoiler alert, it hasn't done well at journals yet.

Hot take:

It doesn’t matter how good your slides look, they still have way too much text on them

I once knew a professor who -- through repeated statements and disciplined non-response -- successfully convinced students he did not know how to use email (of course he actually did). I think about this sometimes and both admire and hate it.

I asked chatgpt to cut something by 15% and it cut it by 50%. Thanks a lot.

So I know I'm old but I've learned recently that Gen Z people talk on Facetime like all day...even fall asleep or go to class with it on. WTH. This sounds like torture.

I counted attendance 10% this semester. Didn't make a difference.

Thinking of doing 100% next semester to see how it goes. Can I do that?

PhD students these days have these sophisticated research descriptions on their online profile. I would have been like “Econ phd student at Yale. Trying to pass my classes. No idea what I’m doing here”
