Finally finished my RagnaLordmon avatar after a lot of hard work.
Really happy with how it turned out!
I can finally show it off in VRChat.

For these shots I took inspiration from official Digimon Card Game art and some fanart I really liked.

Between one to three days. This specific drawing, according to Krita, took over 10 editing hours.
I stay focused because (I'm medicated) I really enjoy what I do, I guess haha. But there are days where I have to pull myself through and not doomscroll, and paint, even if I'm excited about the subject

Helloo, cute art and character :3 I was wondering what's your policy on fanart of your characters? It could be that I'm bad at looking, but I couldn't find anything on your toyhouse

first image very rough pencil sketch "I start sketching very lightly with a .5mm mechanical pencil. Loosely block in the creature and composition. I begin detailing first with the head since I know I will be keeping that in the same place. I back off on detailing the mane though since I'm not entirely sure I want to keep it."

Next image is slighting more refined especially around the head area.

"Before I draw the stripes I lightly go over what will become the orange part of the body. To get a smooth effect I take a cotton swab and lightly smudge the graphite. After that I come back in first outlining the stripes and then filling them in. I erase Lines I don't intend to keep and slowly darken those I am sure I will be keeping. Be careful about drawing too dark too fast because it's a lot harder to erase and too much erasing and redrawing can mess up the paper's texture. For erasing I like to use a small hard eraser and a kneading eraser.

Much more refined image of the creature lots of light and dark contrast and stripes on it's front now.

"Still doing the same things as in step 2, just slowly building up the rendering. After being scanned into Photoshop I use the brightness/contrast and Shadows/Highlights menus to get the background white and make all the pencil details pop. I use a combination of the doge tool and the eraser to get rid of any smudges or dirt that make the picture look messy."

Next image is the same but now has very rough photoshop digital sketch lines over the tail end of the beast in grey and black.

"Here I test out a different pose for the hind quarters in photoshop before making the adjustment on paper. This way I can keep from reworking the paper too many times which can make blending more uneven."

an image of all the pencil work finalized it has a thick brown texture wash overlay now.

"After the final adjustments I scan in and clean up the pencil work agian and take an old paper texture set to "Multiply" adjust the texture opacity till it is to your liking."

Next image has color wash and a small image to show how the colors are lighter than they appear without being an adjustment layer.

"The grass and rocks are on Multiply Layers varying between 60-50 percent opacity. For the creature's colors I am using a color layer on the "linear Burn" setting. At first I just paint colors on in the normal setting once you switch to a layer setting it probably will be too light or dark, from here open the hue and saturation menu and adjust till it looks right or try a different layer setting."

Same image darker and richer but close to a final look.
"More multiply layers for shadows and green growth. I've added a very low opacity green multiply gradient starting from the ground and tapering off. After that I've merged all the layers and used the dodge tool set to highlights on the white areas."

Final image more depth to dark areas.

"More multiply layers for the back and blood. More linear burn layers for the prey's body. A layer set to lighten to make the last bits of white on the face pop and several normal setting layers that I brushed on very lightly to color the claws and gums."

"A small note, the black multiply layers are actually a very dark red/brown, I try not to use pure black but something very close to black as pure black often looks artificial."

In the spirit of sharing art knowledge, here is a look at the process for my Tigerpede illustration. It's pretty old so not the best quality but I hope it can still be helpful. It's a style that I ultimately evolved to help inform the look of the TOW Naturalist posters. #Art
