We use game theory and show the brain is not optimally wired for communication and there’s more to its story:

Brains have many pathways / subnetworks but which principles underlie their formation?

In our #NeurIPS paper lead by Jack Cook we identify biologically relevant inductive biases that create pathways in brain-like Mixture-of-Experts models🧵

Exploiting heterogeneous delays for efficient computation in low-bit neural networks Neural networks rely on learning synaptic weights. However, this overlooks other neural parameters that can also be learned and may be utilized by the brain. One such parameter is the delay: the brain...

Psst - neuromorphic folks. Did you know that you can solve the SHD dataset with 90% accuracy using only 22 kb of parameter memory by quantising weights and delays? Check out our preprint with @pengfei-sun.bsky.social and @danakarca.bsky.social, or read the TLDR below. 👇🤖🧠🧪 arxiv.org/abs/2510.27434

A cartoon-style illustration of a brain and a computer having a conversation. The brain has eyes and a mouth, and is animated to look like it's talking. It says, 'Have you heard about this comp neuro thing happening at Imperial College?'. The computer has a friendly face on its screen and is replying, 'Yeah it's going to be pretty hot'.

Our framework performs matrix operations (translation, multiplication, rotation) through continuous cellular interactions evolving over time (from t=0 to t=60). Core mechanism: cells communicating only with neighbors, and interacting with a local fixed (but learned) heterogeneous substrate, are able to collectively solve mathematical tasks without explicit algorithms.

We propose a novel framework that disentangles the concepts of “hardware” and “state” within the NCA. For us:
- Rules = "Physics" dictating state transitions.
- Hardware = Immutable + heterogeneous scaffold guiding the CA behaviour.
- State = Dynamic physical & computational substrate.

I wrote a thing for @thetransmitter.bsky.social. The attack on scientific infrastructure happening in the US shows that relying on any one country is not a good option for science. We need to start supporting and building international, decentralised infrastructure for science.
