oof. glad nothing fell or got broken, and everyone is ok.
sorry, I meant Silver Springs π€¦π»ββοΈ
My family in Tahoe said they just got rocked pretty good, said they heard it was a 5.3 out of Silver City, NV. Anyone else feel it?
Regular bike helmets and pro or MTB helmets are not the same. Do you wear a standard bike helmet when you are going that fast?
I often ask people if they know how bike helmets are tested, and what forces they are actually certified to withstand, versus the forces in a crash.
ok then, I'll add low-hanging branches to the list.
Also, magpies if you are an Aussie bicyclists. π
I almost included sun, but you still gotta be careful about those openings on top- that would make for an awkward sunburn π
But without the helmet, maybe you would have seen the branch and avoided it? π
Things bike helmets will protect you from:
-Head injuries from a slow speed fall
-Light rain
-Being blamed for not wearing a helmet if you get hit by someone driving 5,000 lbs of metal and glass
Things bike helmets won't protect you from:
-Everything else

You know the idea that Americans don't see themselves as a "downtrodden proletariat, but temporarily embarrassed millionaires/capitalists"?
Seeing corruption so brazen out in the open, with no consequences, eventually punctures the illusion for all but the most delusional, and causes moral injury.
if you made a CEO work as a dishwasher for one week they would go mad like a Lovecraft protagonist confronting an unnameable entity in the cellar
wait, someone actually created a bot to correct people who say "The Sierras"?
hmm, I grew up a real mountain dweller (Lassen County). I say "The High Sierra", when talking about Yosemite or the JMT, but when talking about the mountains generally, it is pretty common to say "The Sierras", even if it isn't correct to the original Spanish. Maybe because it is a range of ranges π
My family in Tahoe woke up to 10" of fresh snow at their houses. Thank goodness. The snowpack in the Sierras is dreadful. Every little bit counts.
yeehah
woo, giddyup. SLO is getting some Texas rainfall rates rn.

A subway style map on a parchment background. The map's title reads: "Narnia Transit Map: Talking Beasts Ride Free." The map has seven keys, one for each of the seven books in C.S. Lewis's Narinia series. The main movements of characters and action in each book are traced by colored lines, like a subway map. Locations in each book are marked out as stops in the lines. There is a drawing of a lion above the title of the map, and in the lower right corner there is a compass rose.
My LoTR subway maps have been quite popular, but they're not the only ones I've drawn! I really like my Narnia one, too.
With separate lines for the plot arcs of each of the books, it gives you a fun way to see Lewis's world.

this is why thereβs been mass revolt and opposition to data centers being built in communities. it is genuinely a health hazard to live this close to something emitting this much sound. these need to stop being built
is AI sentient? is it superintelligent? can it be God? can it be moral? can it be my girlfriend? the real question is why are people so intent on losing their minds. just use the thing to code or write emails if you must. why do you have to make it weird.
we studied that, and more than a few people weren't actually interested in giving up car convenience to save other people's lives. π
HOA fees here in SLO are very commonly $400-$500/month here. It is bonkers. And so many places fall under an HOA.
@danahull.bsky.social I guess it was door number 3!
If at first you spend one whole day to end 70 years of mistrust, tension and war and donβt succeed then just issue an ultimatum and go home?
I quote this one about once a week in class - my students are probably muttering it in their sleep by now π
I do agree that it gets reinforced and upheld by people in power due to their own "car brain".
There is a reason that "transportation psychology" is a whole field of research, whereas "toaster psychology" or "toothbrush psychology" is not. π
I don't totally agree w/ Tony. It *shouldn't* be different - but in the US, everything from automotive advertising to pop culture depictions to video games to actual policy and investment tells people they are kings of the road. Any "attack" on that triggers all sorts of social psychological issues
that is SUCH a good point. β€οΈ
