An open letter to Grammarly and other plagiarists, thieves and slop merchants To everyone at Grammarly, I am writing a book right now, a really challenging endeavor that no doubt someone in Silicon Valley will think it’s fine to steal the day it’s published. I’ve been a profes...

I finally lost my shit about so-called AIs, LLMs, enshittification & everything fucking evil that @officialgrammarly.bsky.social is doing. I'm fucking furious, and not just about what 1 company has done. An open letter to Grammarly & the rest of the LLM hype machine www.moryan.com/an-open-lett...

What Happens When We Decide Not to Take Care of Each Other? A Reflection on the Villainization and Decline of Empathy

Published my first piece on Medium in quite a while—a follow-up to another essay I wrote in 2018. Anyone else feel like we need to bring empathy back?

Remembering Dan McQuade, a Philly journalist like no other Philly journalist Dan McQuade died this week from neuroendocrine cancer. He has been honored by publications and sports teams alike. Jill Ivey shares…

I wrote about my friendship with @dhm.bsky.social and the legacy he’s leaving behind for Broad Street review. Many thanks to @byjenamiller.bsky.social for the encouragement to scroll through our text archive.

Really a perfect send-off. He was so proud of that costume.

I think Dan would have loved that they did. I remember having a conversation with him about how comfortable he found the overalls and when he could wear them again.

I’ve seen a lot of people posting about Dan’s obsession with bootleg shirts. As his yoga teacher as well as his friend, I also got to see Dan wear many of these shirts (as well as his beloved Penn Relays shirt collection) to the studio, where he was happy to have a conversation about them anytime.

Also, @byjenamiller.bsky.social, in that same text exchange Dan also said this, of you:

I just scrolled through years of texts to try to pick something to share here, because Dan was a truly elite texter. But ultimately, I just want to share our final texts, when Dan said the hospice team told him he could probably do yoga one last time and we talked about some resources he might need.

Or a romcom?

He lives in Philly and works in Atlanta. Unless there’s a different guy. In which case I think we now have the premise for a buddy comedy.

I think everyone wants to find the one thing that will land them on Antiques Roadshow.

Fortunately one of Ross’s friends decided to GTFO of the law and open an estate sale business so I’d imagine we will be relying on her heavily when the time comes.

I think about this all the time regarding @rosscurrie.bsky.social ‘s parents. Less so with mine, but that’s math. Ross is an only child with divorced parents, so we’ll have to do this twice with no sibling intervention/assistance. I’m one of three kids and there’s only one house to handle.

From 2005-2011, I first wrote for, and then edited, a blog that covered news and events in and around Philadelphia.

That alone gives me more journalism experience than the EIC of CBS News.

My great-grandfather died while my mom was pregnant with me. I wound up with two middle names, with his initials. Easy-peasy, except for very occasionally when competing paperwork. (The shared initials are also very much the Jewish way of handling naming babies for deceased relatives.)

For a country that ostensibly cares so much about babies, we sure do a shit job of taking care of them, and their parents, when they’re born.

We’re very happy with the center we chose, but I’d be lying if I said our decision wasn’t driven in large part by the fact that it was (a) one of the cheaper places we looked and (b) the only center that provides both diapers and food to all of the kids enrolled there.

I looked at about half a dozen daycare centers before deciding on the one we now send our son to. At least two of those centers cost more than my mortgage—one was almost double.

I think my favorite part of parenting in December is paying for two full weeks of daycare when they’re only going to be open for 3.5 days.

First-of-a-kind study shows encouraging data for trans kids who socially transition Ninety-four percent of participants in a new study stood firm in their trans identity after five years, and "detransitioning" is rare.

The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

We see y'all. No matter what.

The channels at my parents house are Yellowstone, CSI, and Fox News. And not only did someone from my high school die in a real weird way, it happened six months ago, I never heard, and my mom printed up all of the articles about it.

One of my most frequent rants is how you can draw a straight line from the premature termination of Reconstruction to where we are today.
