The teacher recommended a Neal Patrick Harris number from Doctor Horrible's Sing Along Blog. My kid doesn't think of it as a miscast at all, but likes the song and loves performing, so they are going along with it, but they cried when they conveyed the conversation that led to the recommendation.

Nothing binary made sense. Inspired by Cole Escola's burlesque interpretation of "Iowa Stubborn," my kid asked to perform "There She Is/Loading Inventory/The Largest Moving Object" from Titanic A New Musical, but that idea was sunk.

My non-binary kid is having a hell of a time navigating their school's upcoming #Miscast concert. Imagine being told by your teacher, "sure you can perform those roles in youth theater, but you'd never be cast in them in professional theater."

I just saw Pirates! A Penzance Musical on its first night of previews and while the show did a great job of relocating the original in New Orleans, including musically, the overt Indigenous erasure of the last song and the half-hearted attempt to justify it spoiled what was an otherwise fun show.
