"Effective immediately, and until further notice, the National Weather Service is temporarily suspending weather balloon observations at Omaha, NE and Rapid City, SD, due to a lack of Weather Forecast Office staffing. Offices will perform special observations as needed." Balloons helped collect temperature, dew point, humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed/direction in the upper atmosphere twice a day.
Just as we move into severe weather season, the National Weather Service announces it will no longer send up weather balloons out of its Omaha office due to staffing issues.
