I'm about halfway through so maybe I'll change my mind after a little while. But idk, man, it feels like such a slog to even pick it back up.
I am not at all surprised that this is as popular as it is. The language is accessible and juuuuuust repetitive enough that if you're the kind of reader that doesn't have a lot of time to read, you can easily pick it back up whenever.
I was expecting a more manipulative reading experience. Like, a constant stream of women suffering. It's not that, it's very even-handed and slow and, overall, competent. And I like a slow character study. There's just so little energy in the actual prose.
I'm reading The Nightingale and it's such a drag. Not because it's sad or whatever. I'd be fine with sad. I'd be fine with any emotion. It's just so middle of the road that I'm bored out of my mind.
Without Jane, I would've put my money on Darlene as runner up. She's just a wrecking ball of charisma and Nini Coco kinda...isn't. A great performer and artist. Not as clippable.
#RPDR congrats to Myki for the win! This entire season felt light in storylines, but hers was one of the stronger ones. I think once Jane was eliminated she was the obvious winner. (Though I still think Jane should've been Top Two and Myki beating her in the finale would've made the story stronger)
