I think the level progression just isn't rewarding. I don't think you need to get rid of experience entirely, but I do think you need to make leveling feel better.

I beat it for the first time this year, and I think all you'd really need to do is replace the leveling system and give the sword x1.5 length and it would be pretty solid.
