We're going to start turning some of my solo opening "essays" from the Designing Golf podcast into their own YouTube videos, with a bit of production and visual accompaniment. This one is on how to appreciate golf courses while you're playing them: youtu.be/UhzpZrgHzoc?...

I went on @pablotorrefindsout.bsky.social to talk about the Trump administration's efforts to seize control of municipal golf in D.C. A real through-the-looking-glass moment for me. I'm a big fan of the show. youtu.be/8dJaDf3QJFM?...
Gotta talk about this with someone: the single most shocking thing to me is how poorly written that book excerpt is. Like what happened?
Golf is just way more niche than baseball and football. I think it was always going to be easier to establish critical masses of baseball and football commentators/consumers here.
It's a personal choice. So I appreciate that your response focuses on what you personally experienced. I'm a different guy, obviously.
I can answer for myself — of course I have those concerns. But a guilt trip isn't going to make me abandon the platform. I post in both places. I often find "X" pretty unpleasant, but I spent years developing relationships and readers there.
I wasn't the one who sold the company to Elon Musk.
Pretty much nothing! Just being honest. Is what it is.
There are also some full-time media folks who pander to this set, sadly.
A lot of it comes directly to me via mentions. I can't mute people quickly enough!
There's nowhere else I can air this without sabotaging the rest of my day, so:
The amount of cosplaying, posturing, fantasizing, and bloviating about exclusive private golf club "culture" on The Everything App by anonymous accounts is stunning. It's a whole thing. Who believes this stuff?
We profiled the maintenance crew at Bandon Dunes: youtu.be/HCQGg44I_Ew?...
"I loved his brain. I hated the idea of an intruder therein." Are probably the two funniest sentences ever written.
And "American Canto" is such a hilariously pretentious title for a book about your inability to stop boning 70-year-olds
Banging the old, crusty, scandal-ridden politicians you've been charged to do journalism about is objectively a very funny vice to have
No formal definition, as far as I know. It's really a colloquial term. I think it's only properly applicable to holes where the fairway forms a distinct angle, like a literal dog's leg. If you question whether it's a dogleg, it's probably not. My view, at least.
In Bryan's defense, we don't have any widely shared folklore or cultural teachings about the folly of trying to cheat death. I'm pretty sure things always work out well for people who think they can live forever.
Had a lot of fun filming this video about the "Great Hazard" fourth hole at Bethpage Black with my man @therealpjclark.bsky.social. youtu.be/YUGwwUYyVxU?...
Oh yeah, this is for sure better and easier than Googling "Natalie Portman Christian Bale movie"
Top 10 album for me. The A side of "Harborcoat," "7 Chinese Bros.," "So. Central Rain," "Pretty Persuasion," and "Time After Time" is insane.
It has been oddly cathartic to see @pablo.show do all of this to a bunch of guys who probably thought that the modern fourth estate, in its weakened condition, would never touch them.
Hey, we're running a hole design contest for Fried Egg Golf Club members. The winning entry will get built at Andy Staples's new par-3 course at Breezy Point Resort in Minnesota. A unique opportunity! www.thefriedegg.com/articles/feg...
Thank you!
We tried to capture in video form what it's like to play Cypress Point. Check it out: youtu.be/jeU9ZHi0594?...
I regret to inform the internet that the KPop Demon Hunters songs are stuck in my head. "You're my soda pop, my little soda pop," things of that nature. I don't mind it, but it might kill me.
I don't even see him as malicious. Just profoundly dumb.
The misuse of "literally" is just the cherry on top of this sundae of vacuous nonsense
Yes, I murdered that guy. But in my defense, I have a divergent life-preservation personality.
I see this as a design problem rather than an inherent golf problem. Golf courses can and should be designed to accommodate bike/pedestrian traffic through and around. There's also an important distinction to be made between private and municipal courses. We're talking about the latter here.
Right back at you, Charlie!
Oh yeah, I got where you were coming from. You just happened to hit a hobbyhorse of mine. 😂 These attitudes among well-meaning lefties are a big problem for urban municipal golf right now. It's a tough scene because golf courses are absolutely some of the last remaining vigorous "third spaces."
