But, the House Republicans removed those proposals to subsidize multi-billionaires (the Haslem family). The Ohio Senate Republicans just released their initial proposed budget yesterday. They felt like the move was to subsidize billionaires plus provide more tax cuts for their wealthy donors. SMDH
To Gov. DeWine’s credit, his proposed budget would have provided some relief for families. His initial proposal included making childcare more affordable for more families and providing some tax relief to families making less than $94,000 (the child tax credit).
Collectively, we could be investing more in our future each year to improve the quality of life for all of us in Ohio -- not just the well-off.
These resources could go directly to people who actually need a little more money to afford groceries and the housing, childcare and healthcare they need. That $13 billion could go toward improving our libraries and public schools.
These tax cuts for the rich (compounded over time) mean that there's nearly $13 billion each year that's mostly trickling to the bank accounts of rich people. The people making these decisions keep selling us a lie: that it's going to trickle down to the rest of us, too.
It's not happening.
Ohio households making less than $47,000 are getting less than $150 back and people making less than $24,000 annually are paying $80 more each year in taxes compared to what they did in 2005, according to Policy Matters Ohio.
The Republican majority in OH has been doing this (tax giveaways for the wealthy and their corporations) for the last 20 years and it hasn’t improved the quality of life in Ohio.
The outcome is the wealthiest 1% of Ohio households are taking home, on avg, over $52,000 every year in tax breaks.
Meanwhile, a staggering 39% of households in Ohio struggle to afford basic necessities each month, like groceries, rent, childcare, or going to see a doctor. What do working people get in this proposal? Crumbs...
If you see headlines with "flat tax," it's a scam. This is a tax cut for the rich.
According to Policy Matters, over $1 billion will go to people making over $140,000 each year, rather than being invested in improving the quality of life in Ohio. No one making under $100,000 will see a dime.
If you have capacity, please continue to advocate in the US Senate. Let's continue to call on leaders to prioritize budget solutions that protect people who are struggling to make ends meet -- and solutions that support the health and economic security of our neighbors.
At a time when so many people are struggling to afford groceries, housing, healthcare, and other basic necessities, this is cruel. It will raise costs for millions of families.
