Underlining, we actually should call people who use DEI as a slur segregationists as a norm.Talk plainly. The mealy mouth defense of diversity rather than simply talking about reparation, repair,& representation is what got us here.No more ambivalent euphemisms.Values, at full volume.

Remember this? A problem we didn't have in automated speech recognition tools until OpenAI decided they were going to do away with alignment (not the kind that so-called "AI safety" people do)? And they're giving us "artificial general intelligence" any day now right?

Actual pro tip: the best way to break into any creative profession is by helping to support and advance other creators. Your peers are not your adversaries. They are your support group.
Is there a single major tech business idea in the past decade that wasn’t just “what if we broke the law, but at scale?”
We do not need to be an audience for fascist pageantry. Witness your neighbors, your communities, your loved ones. Witness all we need to protect. Be present where you are, dig your toes deep into the earth, plant yourself to endure the oncoming storm.
Hi! If you care deeply about the open web, I hope you’ll consider joining my team. We get to support projects like Watch Duty, Mastodon & many more. This is an excellent primer on some of the privacy dangers posed by large scale AI, from a cybersecurity perspective. Written in clear language, it's the most accessible rundown I've seen yet on these topics!

Today there's discussion about A Man (and the ppl around him) and it can feel like an isolated story about one person, a monster. But we *just* had the Pelicot et al trial in France. In that case, the shock was about how common the men were, just normal dudes. Pls connect all of this in your brain.
I used to work doing live captioning for deaf & HOH undergraduates and literally day 1 of the training was like “not all deaf people speak ASL and not all people who speak ASL can keep up with live captioning, here is an extensive list of the pros and cons and why they are not interchangeable”
Once again, witness the way Black people who may object to serving at a base dedicated to someone who fought and killed to keep Black people enslaved doesn’t enter into the framework
As an immigrant in Germany, I can attest that is a huge huge contribution to those people's ability to navigate a complicated and slow system that is full of stumbling blocks on the way to establishing stability. I wish I had someone to do that.

This is what you are looking for, my beautiful babies.
Folks at MIT Sloan looked at multiple studies of return to office (RTO) mandates & found they are lose-lose-lose. No reward from Wall Street for “getting tough,” an actual decrease in productivity & revenue, and loss of top talent. youtu.be/4ec_yZCWOCY...
1. Did you know that Girl Scouts has, for a long time, accepted trans girls and nonbinary scouts?
Trans kids are under attack. Every year, I make a thread of trans and nonbinary girl scouts you can get your cookies from.
Lets get our cookies from them this year in solidarity!
I was surprised to find that I enjoy DPNs. I have a set that has 6 needles per size and at times will juggle all 6. It's a bit tricky, but also oddly fun.
I hate weaving in the ends. I'll spend months happily making an elaborate project then sometimes never use it because the stupid ends still need to be woven in. The dumbest thing I ever did was a hexagons granny afghan. There were literally 100s of ends. What was I thinking??
But we've been assured that wearing bright clothing is necessary for safety. Seems bad that the new tech to enhance safety can't see it. www.freep.com/story/money/...
stop arguing.
i’ve often had men and women who had more power than me in a situation come up to me after i said the shit that had to be said and thank me
and i hope you know i hold you in all in deep contempt
Sincerely delighted to discover, 45 minutes into this nearly-wordless three-hour documentary about French monks who take vows of silence, that among the reasons they *can* talk is "to make sure the monastery cats know when it's mealtime by making little kitty-calling noises at them."
If I may, I am inserting my TED talk about starting small, doing whatever you can here
People will join you when they see you working. Your efforts don’t have to be permanent or reach millions of people to matter
Everybody can’t just sit online and complain the next four years

If you aren't in a position to sponsor, there are other ways to support maintainers. Pitch an OSS fund in your company. Share a positive experience you had with their library in social or in the project community chat. Go to their repositories and thoroughly review a PR or triage an issue.
a venn diagram. the left circle is “people who understand that climate change is an existential threat” and the right circle is “people who use Al, but, like, not for real work! lol! i just needed a silly pic of a dog on a scooter and it's surprisingly hard to find good reference images”
waaaaay too many people in the middle imo
"In December, BlackRock marked down its investment in Automattic by 10% — and this wasn’t the first markdown. Overall, the investment firm has devalued its investment by more than 50%."
The pettiness is self-destructive. Very sad to see an entire OSS community falter because of one volatile person.
The hashtag makes you sound skeptical and I have no idea why anyone would be. She's the vice president, formerly a California senator, and a California native. Of course she's taking both a professional and personal interest in the needs of people where a major city is burning.
