Monosyndetic and bisyndetic conjunction in Gizey | Studies in African Linguistics

New paper out 🥳
Joint work with @danielaltshuler.bsky.social on monosyndetic and bisyndetic conjunction in Gizey. I keep coming back to this reviewer’s comment: “Absolutely publishable as is… no suggestions for improvement (first time in 20+ years!)” 🤣🤣. It's here: journals.flvc.org/sal/article/...

Thanks to @lingsocam.bsky.social for the Mentoring Award. Teaching and learning from my mentees is the best part of my job. I owe it to them for this recognition. (Wish I could have made it to the LSA this year, but at home teaching and mentoring my newborn). Photo credit @colinphillips.bsky.social

According to the OED, French hérisson really does derive from Latin ericius, and English urchin is indeed ultimately a borrowing of hérisson.

Cool question!!

I asked my colleague Philomen Probert and she said that German Igel and its cognates in other Germanic languages go back to a (western) Proto-Indo-European pre-form such as *eghīnos.
