Why does Elsevier have to make it so hard for reviewers to request for an extension? I had to beg multiple times via emails and through the editorial manager website to no avail. All emails failed to deliver.

Funny how people without PhDs in the respective fields insist that their pet product is excellent in something they don't even know about.

A Visit to Madam Bedi: A Personal History by Tara Westover I was estranged from my own mother, so a friend tried to lend me his.

Something very beautiful and healing to read today:

“How?” I said. “How did you keep from breaking?”
“I broke,” she said. “That is how I kept from breaking.”

Checklist for USA federal data backups | Data management Introduction The United States (US) federal government collects, aggregates, and disseminates a large volume of information and data. This content is used by researchers, policymakers, and many others...

MIT has created an excellent checklist for those making data backups on their own: libraries.mit.edu/data-managem... Data is special. Treat it with care!

And most research universities won't function/exist. More than half of the grant amounts pays for uni's operations (i.e., overhead). At my (public research) uni, state funding only accounts for <11% of its annual budget. The rest comes from endowment, tuition, and of course overhead from grants.

"In most cities, ~ 80% of the crashes occur on 15-20% of roadways. We can make changes to that number. We don’t have to change 100% of our roadways, but we can be strategic & target these places and immediately see benefits in no longer killing our neighbours." -Kelcie Ralph

Single Parents Should Get as Much Paid Leave as Couples, Spanish Court Rules The decision follows a constitutional court ruling that barred discrimination against babies born into single-parent families.

Good job Spain! Many studies say marriage is the most influential factor for well-being (not just finance) of children and adults alike, but they omit the fact that most govt's policies are biased toward married couples and biased against unmarried individuals, making the latter struggle even more.

Ha, I've finally figured out how to make a calendar entry from an email in Outlook online (not desktop). Just drag the mail to the calendar icon, and a new window with the calendar will pop out.

Hm, I rarely have to do so. Do you create an event as an item in your to-do-list? there's an app for it, Microsoft To Do.

Also in Outlook mobile app, the date/time in the email will turn into a blue hyperlink. Click on it to create an entry in your calendar.

Phu Yen, Vietnam. Valencia, Spain. Santiago, Chile. Brest or La Rochelle, France. Or somewhere in the Alps. If I need to hop around a lot without much planning, I'd stay somewhere in NL and take the train to other cities.

Quick question on #ebike: does it work at -18oC (0 F)? I’m tempting to bike next week but not sure if I have to pedal x-hard if the battery dies.

NEW EPISODE: "How Cars Change Us with Tara Goddard." Why do people behave so badly behind the wheel of a car? Why do reporters use passive language to describe traffic violence? @drtaragoddard.bsky.social joins us to talk about her fascinating research.
