Of my colleagues who continued on to graduating, one has given up finding anything academic and is looking to pivot to government. Another is still being exploited as a tutor. Most dropped out, which feels increasingly sensible unless you are rich.
Yeah... Did a masters in philosophy. Then most of a PhD. My professors thought I was suited to becoming an academic. I enjoyed the research and loved teaching. But eventually I could see there would be no chance. Then gradually it became financially impossible to continue anyway!

Probably full immersion mandarin for a year. I know from past experience with Japanese that I'm at that point where it would really pay off. Something special happens to your grey matter if you're nearly exclusively doing a thing for 10-14 hours a day.
