The internet certainly was talked about this way. I’m GenX and remember going online before it was cool at a friend’s house. It seemed really impractical and forced, particularly with how dial-up modems were! But it was talked about as an unstoppable force. And it did achieve a lot eventually. 🤷🏻♂️
