Also, a small, multinational, cabal of terrifyingly rich people run the world and they barely concieve of us as real people but thats not a conspiracy theory
Connected to that, police barely enforce traffic rules because they know that the average driver is so deeply entitled that they would immediately join the 1312 brigade if they recieved two tickets in the same week
Doug Ford knew that the Ontario license plates issued in 2020 with the new design were defective (they're very hard to read at night) and would be recalled but he told various connected people to get them while they could in order to avoid tickets.
The 1920s are currently fighting for semiotic control of the phrase "the twenties" from the invading 2020's

This is a fascinating, unsurprising, infuriating report about how Pathways Alliance (that major Blue Jays sponsor among other things) is greenwashing by just about every metric possible.
It opens with this beautiful bit of understatement
I'll be there on the 17th teaching everyone about worm composting and what that teaches us about transforming the world! I'm very excited to see what else is happening
I think it must make him less popular among his far right flank who might want more like Trump where he never backs down on anything he just eventually forgets he cares about it.
I do think it allows more moderate conservatives and small L-liberals to stay in the tent with the far right
Something I find interstate about Doug Ford is that he seems way more willing to back down under (certain kinds of) pressure than other comparable slopulists. The gravy plane among other things
Good thread and evergreen point. True outside of this context, extremely true within it
Paulo Freire warns us against politics which are only about getting the masses to learn all the proper slogans. While I agree, I do think a carefully crystalized message can stimulate the imaginations and open up new possible worlds in a way that is helpful though the power must be used with care
I'm developing a workshop on political slogans.* What are:
1. Slogans that you have found are effective (even if you disagree with their premise)
2. Qualities of a good slogan
This hanging scroll by Nagasawa Rosetsu, titled Scholars Crossing a Bridge, was created between 1788 and 1789 using ink and light color on paper. The composition is dominated by a sheer, vertical rock face on the left, rendered with bold, sweeping ink washes that convey a sense of immense scale and weight. In contrast, three figures dressed in vibrant red robes are depicted crossing a slender bridge in the mid-ground, their small stature emphasizing the vastness of the surrounding mountainous landscape. The use of atmospheric perspective, with softer ink tones for the distant peaks, creates a deep sense of space and tranquility.

In "Zen in the Art of Archery", the author's teacher says that he must release the desire to hit the target, and the fear of missing the target, because neither of those things have anything to do with archery
Yeah! For some democracy provides what religion used to: a cohering story, a source of ethics, and a context to encounter the greater wholeness. It must have an impact on people when it withers or is attacked
Truly! So it becomes about being very clear on the agency we do have and not burning unnecessary calories by going "But what if reality was fundamentally different than it is, what then?"
There is a risk this slips into passivity but Buddhism has some strong views on the liberation of all. I think of the Bodhisatva who *could* achieve Nirvana but chooses to remain in order to bring others to liberation.
Can we accept our lack of agency without dimming our commitment to all beings?
Understandable, esp for a person who cares about others
I think agency is interesting. We can suffer because we desire more agency than we have. Cultivating equanimity with what we *do* have might offer its own kind of agency where we are not being constantly yanked on by our desire (for agency)
If you can hold onto the emptiness and impermanence of the lever while you use it, and be ready to permanently let go of it at a moments notice when continuing to use it becomes unskillful, then it's mostly ok
Something I'll offer is that, avoiding clinging to things doesn't necessarily mean avoiding them altogether. The lever of policy isnt itself the problem. The problem is when we use it (or anything else) to give ourselves a false sense of secure permanence in ourselves and our world
The autistic Serenity Prayer:
Grant me the Courage to explain myself when it would make things better
The Fortitude to stay silent when it would make things worse
And the Wisdom to know the difference
It's of fundamental importance that we develop the clearest picture possible of what Time is it
A personal hot take, which I don't need anyone else to subscribe to, is that almost nothing is worth standing in line for
As I start planning my new few weeks of Stageworthy, I realize that I haven't been able to feature as many theatre artists from the prairie provinces, or Quebec as I would like. So, if you know a theatre maker from those provinces, please suggest them to me, so I can feature them on the podcast!
